The Clash at the Coliseum is one of the biggest events of the NASCAR season – solely because it sets the atmosphere for the first race. And for that reason, the exhibition event draws a lot of emotional investment from the NASCAR faithful.

The Clash takes place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Anheuser-Busch, the beverage conglomerate, sponsors it. It used to be held at the Daytona International Speedway until 2022 (from 1979) before shifting in 2022.

The race is one of only two non-points-paying races in the NASCAR schedule; the other being the NASCAR All-Star Race. It sets the stage for the NASCAR season as it precedes the opening race, i.e. the Daytona 500.

The 40-odd-year-old race has a rich history. Dale Earnhardt is the easily most successful driver at the event with 6 wins, with the drivers behind him having managed a maximum of 3 wins. Joe Gibbs Racing is the most successful team with 10 wins.

Generally, teams and drivers have used the stage to gain momentum for the season. For instance, Joey Logano won the 2022 Clash; incidentally, he also took home the Cup Series at the end of the season.

As fans navigate months of no NASCAR action, the Clash becomes a highly anticipated race. Last year’s Clash drew over 4 million viewers.
