Rico Abreu‘s return to the States caused a stir in the racing world amid much expectation. Fans excitedly anticipated his victorious return to Volusia Speedway Park when he announced in December 2023 that he would be joining High Limit Racing full-time for the 2024 season.

On the other hand, amid the excitement, doubts remained regarding his absence from the famous Chili Bowl this year. Abreu’s decision to miss the race in favor of a 30-day tour of Australia attracted interest and intrigue. Nonetheless, Abreu welcomed change with steadfast commitment, noting the necessity of reconnecting with his fans in Australia and revitalizing his racing career.

As the focus switched to Volusia, Abreu set out on a quest for greatness. However, he had no idea that Tyler Courtney, aka Sunshine, would dominate the night and change the course of events in the last turn.

Tyler Courtney Snatches Victory from Rico Abreu

In a nail-biting pursuit, Tyler Courtney trailed Rico Abreu throughout the 25-lap race at Volusia Speedway Park. Despite numerous attempts, victory seemed out of reach until the final moments. As Abreu stumbled in the last turn, Courtney seized the opportunity, sliding past to claim victory.

Courtney expressed. “That was fun. It was non-stop the whole time. Even though we were just running around the top, it’s a lot harder than people think. That top was really treacherous. You get your right rear (tire) just over it a little bit, it sucks you over.”

Reflecting on the exhilarating finish, Courtney expressed his excitement, acknowledging the challenge of navigating the treacherous track. With a mix of disbelief and joy, Courtney celebrated his triumph, realizing he had secured the win as the checkered flag waved.

He admitted, “I saw the double checkers, and I didn’t know if we’d already gone another lap or that was the end of the race,” Courtney said. “And I looked at the board and saw the #7 (BC) was number one. It’s just awesome man.”

It was a calamity for Abreu, with 10 laps remaining. After Abreu passed two lapped cars, he stumbled on the cushion in Turn 4 and spun sideways, leaving Brenham Crouch with nowhere to go. Crouch crumpled hard on Abreu’s side, spinning to draw attention to the yellow. Since Abreu’s car remained unharmed when it left the scene, he was lucky enough to maintain the lead.

Even with his incredible comeback, Abreu finished in second place for the second straight night. Looking back on the race, he underlined the unforgiving nature of sprint car racing while acknowledging the necessity for caution in the last set of corners.

“It’s the last lap, and you’re still racing hard. We’re Sprint Car Racing here, so we’re racing as hard as we can for 25 laps on a demanding and technical track. I felt pretty sporty on the cushion. I knew I was good off of (Turn) 2, but I never ran the bottom all race in (Turns) 3 and 4. I should’ve just drove a little bit more secure on the white flag lap, but you never know who is behind you and how close they are” said Abreu.
