Sometimes, second chances work out well in the end. Earlier, Stewart-Haas Racing announced it was rolling up its journey. And, now, Martin Truex Jr has brought the hammer down on his career, making the silly season even sillier. However, on the contrary, the slew of vacancies that these updates have spun off are attracting talented young racers, including a Rick Ware Racing driver.

A year ago, the No. 51 Ford driver could have easily slipped into oblivion as he lost his ride. But Ware’s team roped him in and took a leap of faith. Now their gamble has paid off, and Justin Haley is no less grateful.

Justin Haley embarked on a full-time Cup Series career only in 2022. Posting four top-tens and three top-fives, Haley was on a roll. However, his performance took a backseat in 2023, as he got only one top-five and six top-tens. As a result, Kaulig Racing let him go to allow other talents to trickle into their fold. And, at that crucial juncture of his life, Rick Ware pronounced faith in him.

After disappointing runs earlier this season, Justin Haley saw an uptick in performance, clinching top-tens at Darlington and Gateway. Talking to Bob Pockrass, the 25-year-old reflected on how Rick Ware’s confidence pulled him out of a dark hole. “Obviously, we’re very fortunate to be running well. We kind of mixed things up. But looking back a year ago…when I did not have an opportunity left in the Cup Series, I trusted them and they trusted me. I kind of gambled my whole career and life, everything I’d done up till that point to trust Rick in the process, and came through,” he said.

Holding a 2019 Cup Series win at the prestigious Daytona 500, Justin Haley has already proved what he can achieve. He is a superspeedway genius, with four Xfinity wins on those racetracks. Haley also won three Craftsman Truck races, advancing to the Championship 4 playoff round in 2018. Clearly, he can do wonders with a little push.

And the 25-year-old is immensely grateful to his owner for lending him that push. With multiple full-time opportunities looming in one of the most tumultuous Silly Seasons, Justin Haley professed complete loyalty to Rick Ware. “Definitely committed to Rick,” he declared. “If he wants me to stay 5-10 years, I’ll stay 5-10 years – just because he gave me the opportunity when I was off-put…you know, just putting his arm out, kind of saving me from the waters last year.”

Justin Haley’s dedication to Rick Ware Racing by turning down a superb opportunity shows his great character.

At Darlington Raceway, Justin Haley delivered a promising performance for Rick Ware Racing. He fetched the organization’s ninth top-10 finish in 616 NASCAR Cup Series starts. Significantly, it was the first for the team on a non-drafting track. For Haley, it marked his third consecutive top-10 in the spring event at the 1.366-mile oval. Clearly, something in Haley and Ware’s partnership is strikingly good.

And Justin Haley is so focused on his efforts that he even turned down an opportunity to run the Indianapolis 500. Talking to Kickin The Tires earlier this year, the Winamac, Indiana, native thought it was not the right time. “I’ve actually turned down one or two Indy 500 rides, which is surprising. I don’t feel like I’m quite ready for it yet, but I had an opportunity to run it a few years back…I’m not quite to the point in my career where I feel like that’s something I want to tackle.”

Instead, Haley is fully attending to his current career path. “I feel like the guys later in their career want to go do fun stuff like that, but for me, it’s just kind of (keeping) all (of my) focus on the Cup Series.” Evidently, his dedication is paying off with good runs. Yet the road is long and thorny, as the No. 51 RWR team keeps hunting for a playoff spot.
