Rick Hendrick donned his driver’s signature oversized hat as his youngest star brought his team their 300th Cup Series win with a decisive late rally. While the team’s generational talent, Kyle Larson, got spun around, crashing out of the race, his teammate did not sit idle. Seeing the opening, the 25-year-old cut through the field, passing the then-race leader Bubba Wallace and avenged Larson, snatching the lead from his bitter rival to reclaim the top spot in the standings.

William Byron and his #24 HMS Chevy are on a roll here in 2023. The 25-year-old is having a breakout season, racking up win after another. Standing atop the standings as the leader, Byron so far has 6 wins to his and is the first-ever driver this season to cement a berth in the round of 8.

Coming from his humble iRacing beginnings to become the cream of the crop in one of the most challenging promotions in the world, Byron’s career is certainly a fairy tale for many. All the work he put in, and countless hours of grind, is paying off now as the 2017 Xfinity Series champion is having a brilliant if not one of the best runs in the Cup Series in recent times with wins across many tracks including his first-ever road course win in Watkins Glen.

Hours after his 10th career win, Byron revealed his luck charm. In a social media post, the 25-year-old shared a wholesome short clip with his friend in his hand and a smile going from ear to ear. The post captioned, “Good luck charm,” had the song, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” playing in the background as Byron put on a cowboy hat, picking up his doggo as camera flashes illuminated the scene.

Though Larson got his day ruined in a flash in the closing laps of the race after a duel with his 23XI Racing rival, Bubba Wallace, Rick Hendrick was pretty happy about his drivers’ performances. The 74-year-old bossman started his take, complimenting Byron’s crew chief, Rudy Fugle, mentioning how all of their cars were fast.

He said, “Really did a great job all day all our cars were fast… Didn’t know that didn’t think the #24 was gonna be up there and they worked their way up there through pits sequence.” He also lauded Larson for putting up such a great show, going all out till the last moment, saying, “Kyle was so strong I thought he’d just drive away but Bubba ran him pretty hard there and I guess he could have lifted a little bit Kyle could have… That’s what that’s what Larson does. That’s what I love about him. He’s driving wheels off of every lap and so real proud of him.”

The boss man then drew the playoff outcast, Chase Elliott, into the picture as he mentioned how the 2020 Cup Series champion is returning to form. He said, “Seeing Chase (Elliott) up in the top-10 top-five in last two-three races that’s a good sign for you know, finishing the year strong winning the race.”
