Just like that, Chase Elliott‘s chances of spearing into the playoffs became a near impossibility after losing the edge to his own teammate at the much-anticipated road race at Watkins Glen. With the 2020 Cup Series champion yet again failing to deliver the hype riding on him, his chances of making it into the playoffs just became narrower with just one race standing between him and the playoffs.

Leading over 60 laps of the 90-lap race, NASCAR’s golden boy stood no chance as his teammate and Rick Hendrick‘s most valuable asset dropped a bomb, acing Stage 2 and eventually finishing the race with an impressive pace.

Heading into the 2.45-mile road course at Watkins Glen, NASCAR’s golden boy Chase Elliott was optimistic about blasting his way into the playoffs with a stellar win at the coveted road course, something he missed at Indy. However, as the race progressed Elliott soon realized the obvious after the #9 Chevy ran out of fuel, losing valuable track position and invaluable time to get back in the game.

Keeping aside all those, what surprised many fans was William Byron, the 25-year-old HMS speedster who kept it on till the final lap as he crushed Elliott’s last hopes, essentially pouring salt into his wounds. What is more impressive is the way the youngster did it, leading 63 laps out of the 90-lap race, the #24 Chevy had speed, and that too in plenty as he won Stage 2, edging out JGR veteran Denny Hamlin.

With this exceptional win, Byron now has the most number of wins this season -5 and his first-ever road course win. With Elliott’s own teammate, essentially ruining his playoff chances, Elliott fans had vented out their frustration online as NASCAR journalist and enthusiast Jeff Gluck pointed out the driver’s achievement.

While the youngster celebrated his first road course win and racked up his 5th win of the season, Chase Elliott’s chances of making it into the playoffs just got slimmer. With another road course done and dusted, Elliott is now out of his element as we head to a speedway race next week at Daytona.

The KBM prodigy seemed like he was a man on a mission as he got the best of Indy triumphant Michael McDowell, benefitting from his pit lane violation. With the Stage 1 winner, McDowell dropping down to 15th after the violation, Byron pulled off the incredible, dishing out an incredible pace as he outclassed the entire field to earn himself a spectacular win.

Elliott fans’ emotion was evident even as the NASCAR journalist speculated a possible win from the young gun. However, fans did not quite have it as they vented out their disappointment, bashing NASCAR for ruining the race by making the cars similar.

One fan called the race a snoozefest,

“Usually I’m not one to dislike a race but man this has been a snoozefest. Follow the leader.”

Another user pointed out the obvious, saying,

“yeah this is poverty. got some serious work to do on the next gen cars for literally every single track except 1.5 mile ones”

While another fan was waiting for the journalist’s poll,

“Can’t wait to click no on the was it a good race poll”
