Out of all the NASCAR teams, Hendrick Motorsports certainly stands tall as the most popular one among the fans. Of course, the likes of Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson play a big role in attracting these fans, but HMS, for the most part, has enjoyed a cult-like following. Superstar drivers like Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson were the ones to pave the way, with Elliott and Larson now taking over that role. Recently, it was revealed that Chase Elliott had topped the list in terms of merchandise sales. He even eclipsed the NASCAR brand to top the charts for 2024. Well, those fans who couldn’t get their favorite merchandise now have the opportunity to bag even bigger prizes.
HMS has put out a Gen 6 car on auction, and going by the listing on the Iron House Auction, it is the same car that Jimmie Johnson crashed at Charlotte Motor Speedway in October 2011.

It is indeed rare for a team like Hendrick Motorsports to put out their race car on auction. This is the only time when an ardent race fan could grab a hold of their favorite team’s race-related item to add to their collection. The Gen 6 car is listed as HMS #659 Gen 6 Chassis on Iron House Auction’s official website, and the current bid stands at $17,550.
Given that the window for making bids on the car is open for 3 more days, the price of Johnson’s race car could go up. Now, the car doesn’t come with a Lowe’s livery; it has a plain body with the same chassis and engine used from the 2007 season. Well, there’s a reason why this race car has multiple elements missing from it, from paint schemes to battery.
Jimmie Johnson raced with this particular car in a total of 7 races in 2007, but a nasty accident during the Coca-Cola 600 left the car in pieces. Johnson spun on Lap 273 during the Coca-Cola 600 race and had a hard hit on the inside wall. Luckily, the SAFER barriers were installed on the inside wall on Turn 4. Who knows how egregious the crash could’ve been had it not been for the SAFER barriers?
“I was very thankful the SAFER was there. I just wish we could find a way to extend the wall out and redirect the car from that opening or close that opening up.” Johnson said after the race. Fast forward to 2025, the same race car is now listed for auction, and going by the recent trends, it’s fair to say HMS fans will fight tooth and nail to get the #659 Gen 6 Chassis under their possession.

Well, it is hard to get hold of a race car when so many fans are competing for a single item. But the good news is that HMS fans will have more options as Iron House has also listed more team-related items on their website.

Hendrick Motorsports fans are spoiled for choice with the auction

Apart from Jimmie Johnson’s race car, plenty of other items are up for auction that have been used by the team during race events. The offerings include roller chassis, engine parts, suspension components, drivetrain parts, body panels, and surplus machinery and equipment. The auction is managed by Will Lilly and Marc Baysek of the Iron House Auction.
The No. 88 Truck Hero car that was piloted by Alex Bowman, along with the No. 48 Ally chassis, were also on display. Hendrick Motorsports shared the photos of the items that will be going for auction, which captured the presence of these two cars. Unlike Johnson’s race car, these two chassis had the original paint scheme and car number printed on them. But more details about engines and other components will be available on the Iron House website.

“This is a rare opportunity for the general public to acquire parts and pieces of the Hendrick Motorsports legacy that have never been available for purchase,” Lilly said in a press release. Given the massive fandom HMS enjoys, most of the items listed on the auction are expected to have a new home. Head over to Iron House Auction’s website if you are interested in adding a piece of HMS history to your NASCAR collection.
