The Petty name is synonymous with motorsports. Over the years, the racing community has seen four generations of the family, tear it up on the racetrack, securing some memorable victories and creating a legacy with multiple championships. However, for some members of the family, connections go beyond the racetrack. Especially when it comes to country music. So you can imagine the elation when a member of the Petty family married country singer Randy Montana, an association which they look back on with pride.

Despite his life revolving around racing and being no stranger to fame, Kyle Petty finds the prospect of being connected to a rising country music sensation thrilling. Given his age and experience, it’s not often that the 64-year-old feels ‘overwhelmed’, but being associated with the Montanas may be one of those few occasions.

Richard Petty’s son is mad for Montana

Randy Montana is making quite a name for himself in the music industry, isn’t he? The son of accomplished songwriter Billy Montana already has several number-one hits to his name, such as “Ain’t Much Left of Lovin’ You” and “1,000 Faces,” earning a reputation as a talented songwriter. For Kyle Petty, being connected to the Montanas in a completely different industry than the world of motorsports is something he takes great pride in, even though the 39-year-old Montana seems to be unfamiliar with the iconic family and their line of work over the years.

Sharing his thoughts about being connected to Billy Montana’s legacy, Kyle Petty candidly said, “I think it’s the coolest thing in the world to be related through marriage to Randy Montana. His dad, Billy Montana is a great songwriter. But Randy has had like nine number-one hits in recent years. Just a phenomenal, phenomenal young man.” Hinting at his father Richard Petty’s ‘inferiority’ to the Montanas, the 64-year-old went on to say, “I don’t, I don’t even think he knows that we drove race cars and they don’t care that we drove race cars. But the music thing is huge.”

When his daughter first began dating, Kyle Petty had a funny way of evaluating potential suitors. The criteria to get his approval was, “If a kid can swim across a lake with cinder blocks, around his ankles and his wrist.” However, when Randy Montana came along, not only did he pass the ‘imaginary test’ but his immense talent and sound character immediately won over Richard Petty’s son. Even though country music and NASCAR seem worlds apart, the North Carolina native considers both to be a part of American traditions.

Randy Montana didn’t enjoy NASCAR until he met his wife

Being married into the Petty family is equal to being associated with NASCAR royalty. Four generations have already made their mark in the motorsports world, and it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the legacy will continue with the next generation. While Randy Montana wasn’t a big fan of the stock car racing series until his wife Montgomery and his in-laws took him in, he has since understood why the sport is so popular.

Speaking to ‘The Boot’, Randy Montana candidly said, “Before I met Montgomery I really was not a fan of racing. I just didn’t get it. But then they took me to a race where I sat down in the pit box where the crew chief was right next to me, and those cars were going by at 190 miles per hour, and I thought, ‘OK, I get it now. I see why people come out by the thousands to see this!'”

While the 39-year-old isn’t getting behind the wheel of a racecar anytime soon, the country music artist does take pride in being a safe driver. He revealed that between the two of them, his wife is more susceptible to following her family’s legacy, saying, “She has more speeding tickets than I do, as she should. I’m the safer driver. I drive like an old woman!” The singer also revealed that he has been sharing songwriting tips with father-in-law Kyle Petty, to bond with the veteran racer in their free time.
