NASCAR is often considered a dangerous sport due to the high-speed nature of racing and the potential for crashes, wrecks, and spins. While it can be both thrilling and intense for fans to witness such incidents, more often than not, these intense moments can lead to physical altercations between drivers, with Bubba Wallace and Aric Almirola being the most recent examples. However, what if we tell you NASCAR has even seen two members from the same household in a similar conflicting situation? What if they are dad and son?
Well, In NASCAR, it’s not uncommon to see the children of drivers following in their father’s footsteps and becoming a part of the sport. Notably, Richard Petty and Lee Petty was one such father-son duo that was present many times on a single race track.
During races, since drivers were fiercely competing for the lead, as they do now, mistakes happened, and incidents occurred. Even experienced drivers like Richard Petty made costly mistakes. Now, in a recent reflection, Richard Petty recalled a specific incident involving him and his father, Lee Petty. He expressed regret over the mistake that led to an incident between them during one of their races.

Richard Petty on his “Stupid Mistake” of his iconic career
Martinsville Speedway is a half-mile short track known for its tight turns and close racing. During the 1961 Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville Speedway, Richard Petty was driving his No. 43 Plymouth while his father, Lee Petty, was on the track too.
Late in the race, Richard and Lee Petty were battling fiercely for track position and the lead. As they were racing side by side, their cars made contact on Turn 3, causing both vehicles to spin out of control. The contact and subsequent spin resulted in both cars going off the track, allowing other competitors to pass them.
Recently, NASCAR shared a video of Richard Petty holding a black-and-white photograph of the crash. Talking about the incident, he explained the situation and ended up accepting his biggest mistake.
“That’s how I tore both race cars. It was just one of the stupid mistakes that I made.”

With all said and done, ‘The King’ believes, “If you are on the racetrack, time to time you gonna hit somebody whether it’s your dad, son or somebody you like, or somebody you don’t like.”
Still, when NASCAR’s Instagram put out this video, he reacted with a single emoji, expressing his embarrassment. All his comment had was, “😳.”

The NASCAR Hall of Fame contenders for 2024 have been revealed, and the spotlight is on the legendary seven-time champion duo, Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus. With their remarkable track record, they are strong contenders for the upcoming February event.
Richard Petty, also a seven-time world champion hailed as the “King” of his era, fully supports Johnson and Knaus’ automatic inclusion in the Hall of Fame. On SiriusXM Radio, he emphasized that their seven championships make them unquestionably deserving of the honor.
“I would say they are automatic, standpoint both of them won seven championships and you know they proven to get the job done.”

He continued, “So the competition they had and everything they really accomplished whole life in their career so again I think it’s going to be an automatic deal to those two go in for no trouble and listen its not that they don’t deserve it this year the deal is you know this is the first chance to get in so again I don’t think anybody would doubt that they’re going to get it”
