Richard Petty is undoubtedly a NASCAR legend and is part of a rich racing pedigree. His father, Lee Petty, was the one to kick-start what would now be the family tradition. Following three Grand National titles, Richard Petty went on to add a record seven more under his belt. After him were Kyle Petty and the late Adam Petty, though neither achieved the same level of success as their predecessors. In the latter’s case, he tragically perished in an accident at the age of 19, before his full potential could be realized.

Recently, Richard Petty sat down with his oldest daughter for a conversation. Among other subjects, they spoke of how they lived as a racing family, and life in the fast lane. According to the 7-time champion, his oldest daughter was a lot like her mother. She then spoke of how things played out during a race weekend, where they would often visit the tracks.

Families are an important part of an individual’s journey. From a common man to stars like Pettys, almost everyone has a family and their support to credit for their success.

Talking to her father on the Petty Family Racing YouTube channel, Sharon Farlow said, “No, for some reason, I followed the rules my parents gave me. I followed the rules and I followed Kyle. All the classes that he was in, I was in the next year. All I heard about was, how wonderful Kyle was. I always tried to do the right thing. Sometimes our gas man would put gas in our car. Like, he’s bring the gas can from the pits, if there was extra gas and he’d just go in and fill up our car.”

“We’d just say, ‘Wait one more lap, wait one more lap’. Mom would be screaming, but a lot of tracks we went to, we would always do a lap around the track. There were times when the tracks would turn the lights out,” she added.

Next month, Petty is expected to grace the Goodwood Festival of Speed with his presence. ‘The King’ is motorsport’s first ever 7-time champion, long before Michael Schumacher made it cool. Aside from those 7 titles, he has racked up an incredible 200 race wins, including seven Daytona 500s and 27 wins in a single season.

The annual festival will not only welcome the man himself but also his iconic 1970 Plymouth Superbird. Without a doubt, the car, distinguished by its large rear wing, will be one of the biggest attention-grabbers. The car itself will be piloted by his son, Kyle Petty. Other tributes talk about a special ‘Balcony Moment’ outside Goodwood House.
