Childhood is a fun time and yet sometimes, most of us end up making mistakes that call for unprecedented punishment. Kyle Petty has been quite vocal about how his childhood was especially after he embraced his career as a racing commentator for FOX Sports. Just like any other child, even Petty ran odd jobs around the house and got paid for the same, of course in pennies! However, this time Petty was working at his grandfather Lee’s house. Lee Petty had asked Kyle Petty to pick up the golf balls around and he would be paid for the same.
However, after the errand was done, Petty was shocked at the payout that was handed over to him by his grandfather. Remembering the incident, Petty said, “Granddaddy Petty handed me a quarter and said, “That’s all the change I’ve got.” I looked him straight in the eye, frustrated, and said, pick up your own damn golf balls next time, before heading home”.
The news reached out to Kyle Petty’s parents and Richard Petty has always been known to have a notorious reputation. While Kyle was coming back from the errand, he was asked by his parents to cut a switch. While many might not be able to relate now, breaking twigs is quite a form of corporal punishment. This is a lesson that the child has committed something wrong and the twig will be used to discipline him. When the child is asked to break the twig himself, it stands as a testimony that the action he committed is not correct and gives the child the time to reflect on the behavior.
Remembering the experience, Kyle Petty said, “Next thing I knew, my parents told me to cut a switch on my way back across the yard. That’s the last time I ever cussed at my granddaddy. I’ll say that much.” The incident not only served as a humbling moment for Kyle but also as a reminder of the strict yet valuable lessons instilled by the Petty family. It’s a memory that he now laughs about but admits left a lasting impact on his respect for elders.
Richard Petty’s way of disciplining young Kyle is no surprise. Back when Richard Petty had just started out in NASCAR, he raced against his father in 1959 at Lakewood. In a very close finish, Richard Petty finished in first place with his father Lee close behind. However, Lee protested the result, arguing he lapped Richard Petty earlier in the race, and the win was awarded to Lee. It served as a brilliant reminder of how tough love molded the legacy of the Petty family.

Reacting to the same, Kyle Petty said, “Today was a big day for our family. 403 additional acres donated to @VictoryJunction”. The inception of the organization was laid in memory of Adam Petty who was the son of Kyle Petty. Adam Petty died after an unfortunate crash that occurred at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The 403 land donation is indeed a huge addition because it can now house more children towards a noble cause. This donation stands as a testament to Richard Petty’s enduring legacy, not just as a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion but also as a philanthropist with a heart for impactful change. By contributing 403 acres to Victory Junction, he has ensured that Adam Petty’s memory continues to inspire and support countless children in need.
