It seems like Murphy’s law has been working overtime against Kyle Busch this season. With five DNFs already this season, and five more races to go until the regular season ends, it could potentially get worse for the Richard Childress Racing driver. His race in Pocono also ended prematurely, thanks to Corey LaJoie’s No. 7 Chevy, making contact with Busch’s No. 8 Chevrolet. Rowdy, who has traditionally been outspoken post-race about incidents that didn’t go in his favor, was almost indifferent.
Richard Childress Racing is a legacy team, carrying the name of a NASCAR Hall of Famer. Considering how the team has performed this season, combined with Kyle Busch appearing almost broken in front of the media, it could potentially ruin Richard Childress’ legacy if things continue the way they are.

Winless in 42 races this season, Kyle Busch is going through the most difficult patch of his career. The 39-year-old has never finished the past nineteen seasons without a single race win, but as things stand, it doesn’t just look like a possibility this time around. Rowdy has been through it all this season- multi-car collisions, running out of fuel, technical issues, and more. You name it, he has been through it. The way things are progressing, Busch seems like he is slowly giving up on Richard Childress Racing.
Speaking about Kyle Busch’s situation at PRN’s Fast Talk, co-host Doug Rice said, “Nothing good is coming out of Richard Childress Racing this year. I don’t like that, because that’s one of our legacy teams. They are supposed to be decent, and they are not this year. There’s no way to polish it.” The veteran broadcaster has a point, as none of the Richard Childress Racing drivers have secured a win this season, a big step down from last year when Kyle Busch won three races and made it into the playoffs.
In response to Doug Rice, co-host Alexis Erickson said, “When you have a talent like Kyle Busch, and you’re not able to use that talent to get results on the racetrack in a meaningful way, that’s scary. That shows me that whatever issue they have is deep-rooted. It’s going to take a lot to overcome. I think at this point, you can tell, even in his interactions. Do you guys think Kyle has just thrown his hands up and said, ‘Well, this it’.”
Despite having a contract with Richard Childress Racing until 2025, it looks like Kyle Busch will welcome the opportunity to switch teams if it’s an option presented to him. Having raced for Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing in the past, the woes he is facing currently fall in unfamiliar territory for Rowdy, and it’s not what he wants to get used to.

Is Richard Childress risking his legacy by sticking with a seemingly disillusioned Kyle Busch?
Have an interesting take?
The biggest concern for Kyle Busch is that there hasn’t been enough progress throughout the season to justify staying at Richard Childress Racing. As things stand, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the team’s dismal season will continue next year. Kyle Busch knows that he is too talented to wait around, and given his pedigree, there will be plenty of teams willing to take a bet on him, despite his lack of race wins in the season so far.

It’s been quite a fall for Richard Childress Racing. Once considered to be one of the most dominant teams in the NASCAR Cup Series, featuring drivers such as Dale Earnhardt Sr and Kevin Harvick, the team is a shadow of its former self in the 2024 season. Kyle Busch is 18th in the driver standings, unlikely to make it to the playoffs while Austin Dillon is even further back in 32nd place, 433 points behind leader Chase Elliott.
Speaking to Dustin Long of NBC Sports about his team’s season so far, Richard Childress said, “This is very frustrating. We feel that we’ve got a good shot. We can still turn it around, it’s not over, but we’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to do to turn it around.” While fans may not share as optimistic of an appraisal of his team’s situation, it’s refreshing to see the team’s owner remain positive despite only five races left before playoffs begin in Atlanta.
