Richard Childress snubs NASCAR for Austin Hill—Is this a sign of changing times in racing?

Richard Childress‘ Cup Series team may be going through a bland stretch. But his Xfinity team is on fire this season. Both of Childress’ drivers, Austin Hill and Jesse Love, have recorded wins and some jaw-dropping finishes this season. Hill particularly owns a notorious reputation on the track, locking horns with irked rivals. Now he may irk some NASCAR fans as well.

As the entire NASCAR grid is on a two-week break, these stellar drivers are enjoying it as well. On this casual occasion, they meet for a quick game while discussing a well-established NASCAR tradition. But as it turns out, Austin Hill prefers the tradition elsewhere.

Jesse Love is currently in his rookie year, competing in NASCAR’s national series segment. After clinching an ARCA championship, he made a jump directly into the Xfinity Series this year. And boy has he sparkled—Love already owns a win at Talladega Superspeedway, besides notching 5 top-fives. The No. 2 Chevy driver has his teammates to thank, especially Austin Hill. As the two have cultivated a working relationship on the racetrack, they also like spending time off their workplace.

So the two had a little get-together for a quick game of cornhole. Covered as part of the Richard Childress Racing summer series, the two can be seen trying their hand at the relaxing game. Love attempts to distract Austin Hill by asking what kind of tailgating he likes. Tailgating is an intricate part of NASCAR racetracks; fans usually bring their own grills and food and enjoy a nice barbecue while watching their favorite drivers race.

But surprisingly, Austin Hill snubbed this age-old NASCAR tradition. He told Love about his own tailgating story, far from a racetrack. “I’d say that, I went to a Georgia Bulldogs game a few years back. And that was a good time. I mean, you’re talking about…We had the cornhole set up. We had a little mini grill going…I mean, we had it down. The music was playing… old ’90s country. So I thought that that was a really good time doing that.”

As soothing as that story sounds, the point still remains that Hill likes tailgating at a sport other than NASCAR. This struck Jesse Love, as the 19-year-old racer scratched his head at the unfamiliar name: “Georgia Bulldogs? Is that a golf team?” Then Austin Hill made a discernably irritated face, as he explained to Love: “Come on, man. No…It’s college football, you know what I’m saying.”

So apparently, Austin Hill’s relaxation choice is far from a NASCAR racetrack. That is quite understandable, as Hill is mostly preoccupied with his racing performance at a NASCAR venue, and would naturally like a breather outside somewhere. But even though some diehard NASCAR fans would take him to task for this, Love probably would not, as the two share a good team bond.

The 2024 season seemed thoroughly daunting for Jesse Love at first. Coming fresh from the ARCA Menards Series, the rookie had no prior experience in a NASCAR environment. However, he is a fast learner and received tremendous help. Love reaches out to Cup teammates Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch for advice. But he has a close working relationship with Austin Hill. But the two have vast differences: Love is only 19, while Hill is 30 with a family. They also hail from different coasts.

The two make up for this gaping difference in golfing and also their similar approach to RCR. Austin Hill explained this beneficial similarity: “I think one thing that’s very similar with the both of us is just the drive that we have to be great. Like we want to go win every race that there is and if we don’t win, we’re both frustrated. You guys don’t see it on our Monday morning meetings, but we’re very frustrated.” Hill also commended Love’s meticulous preparation. “When we get to the race track he’s doing a really good job of watching film and doing all these things, watching the in-car (camera) and putting everything to use when he gets there.”

Evidently, both Hill and Love share a special bond on and off the racetrack. That affords them such amusing moments as a quick cornhole session.
