The 2023 season was a crucial year for NASCAR. The year marked the organization’s first-ever street course in Downtown Chicago which went down as the most-watched NASCAR event on NBC in recent times. While the torrential rains delayed the race and darkness shrouded the track, cutting it short, one name echoed in victory lane at the end of the race – Shane Van Gisbergen.

The New Zealander won his first NASCAR Cup Series race in his debut, outclassing the entire field and putting them to shame in their backyard. Not only did the 3-time Supercar champion shatter all expectations, but he also brought in a lot of eyeballs from across the globe to Chicago, making the event a massive hit, and prompting other teams to bring in big international names.

Brodie Kostecki was another player who was brought in to derail the SVG hype train. Richard Childress roped in SVG’s supercar rival to end the Kiwi’s domination at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But post the conclusion of the 2023 Cup Series, Childress is making another decisive move, flying Australia to bring in the 25-year-old to NASCAR in 2024 to counter Trackhouse Racing‘s plans.

Richard Childress’ masterstroke against Shane Van Gisbergen & Trackhouse Racing

While the NASCAR Cup Series has concluded with Ryan Blaney being crowned as the 2023 champion, a few thousand miles away, Australian Supercars champion Shane Van Gisbergen is gearing up to defend his crown against Brodie Kostecki as the schedule reaches its end this week.

Points leader and favorite, Kostecki will eye a decisive win over the reigning and defending champion before SVG goes trophy hunting to the US. But eyes and ears are on Childress who will be flying to catch the grand finale in Adelaide, in an effort to rope in the 25-year-old for a couple of races in Cup Series including an oval for the upcoming season.

According to Australian publication, theaustralian.com, the 78-year-old team owner said, “One of the reasons I am coming over is to possibly talk to a couple of the sponsors that were involved with us and see if we can get the sponsorship lined up and see if we can bring him over again. I would like to run him in at least four, maybe five (races). We have a few road courses but would like to also run him in an oval over here.”

The scene was electric for debutant SVG who trounced NASCAR drivers, cutting through the field like a hot knife through butter. When the conditions were tough at the rain-drenched city lanes of Chicago, the Kiwi showed his superior race craft when he made history, acing the organization’s inaugural street race.

Consequently, he was the man of the hour with NASCAR fans taking a liking to the Supercars champion as they scrounged the internet for more updates on the Aussie promotion and its drivers. But little did they know that race would start a new trend. Soon team owners started featuring international talents to captivate the community and send a message to rival teams.

While 23XI Racing brought in Kamui Kobayashi from the endurance world, Childress decided to bet his cards on SVG’s Supercar rival Brodie Kostecki. Though he couldn’t live up to the set expectations, finishing 22nd, owing to RCR’s vulnerability, Childress has made up his mind.

He said, “I know he can do road courses and street racing but we want to really run him on an oval. I think he will really be strong on an oval. Our whole deal is going to depend on his schedule in the Supercars series, what races that we can race him in.”
