Ty Dillon made his NASCAR debut in the Truck Series back in 2011. He progressed to the Xfinity Series the next year, and by 2014, he made his debut in the No. 33 RCR Chevy. It has been quite a journey for him as he got a full-time seat in the Cup Series back in 2017 with Germain Racing. After four years of driving with the team, he decided to move on, which was not the best decision for him. He shifted to the Xfinity Series and then had to step down to Truck racing again. However, after spending years in training and practicing, 2025 might be the year for Ty Dillon to get back to the major leagues.
For the 2024 season, Ty Dillon was racing full-time for Rackley WAR in the Craftsman Truck Series. After running with the team for 18 races, the team decided to give a young driver a chance. Dawson Sutton will be taking over the seat in the No. 25 car, but that does not mean the team let Ty Dillon go. He will continue to work with the team as a mentor to Sutton until the season ends.
This year, Dillon has taken part in all the national series of NASCAR, and while he was full-time in the Truck Series, he was on a part-time deal for the other two. However, judging by the way things are going, it looks like Dillon might be leaving his Truck Series seat to find his way back as a full-time Cup Series driver. Bob Pockrass posted on September 23, “Dawson Sutton will drive the Rackley WAR No. 25 truck the rest of the year. Ty Dillon will remain as a mentor to Sutton. Dillon remains a candidate for a Cup ride at Kaulig next year.”

Dillon’s performance was a bit underwhelming, as he had only two top-10 finishes this season. If we compare him to his predecessor, Matt DiBenedetto, the latter accomplished seven top-10 finishes, which includes a win at Talladega in 2022. Now Sutton taking things ahead seems promising, but he has little experience, which includes two starts in the Truck Series. One ended in a 28th-place finish at North Wilkesboro and the other in 18th place finish at Nashville.
Further, though there is no confirmation about Dillon’s seat in the Cup Series, Kaulig Racing has been interested in him for a while. He will join a driver lineup for the No. 16 Chevrolet that includes names like AJ Allmendinger, Shane Van Gisbergen, and Derek Kraus. In fact, Pockrass even suggested that Dillon was the favorite to replace Allmendinger.
Further, Dillon has experience in the seventh-generation racecar as he drove full-time in the Cup Series in 2022 and 2023 with Petty GMS Motorsports and Spire Motorsports. The driver has two top-20 results in 11 Cup Series starts at Richmond Raceway. And in 2024, he has had three top-20 finishes in six races.
While many know that Ty Dillon is the grandchild of Richard Childress, some may not realize that the co-owner of Rackley WAR is Dawson Sutton’s father.

Richard Childress Racing and Kaulig Racing are friendly teams, and that’s where a chance to hire Ty Dillon comes into play. When the news of Ty Dillon being replaced was announced, the driver made a public statement saying, “I am thankful to everyone at Rackley WAR for the opportunity to make my return to the Truck Series. I look forward to mentoring Dawson [Sutton] for the remainder of this season and am very excited to focus on my future plans behind the wheel in 2025.”
However, Dillon was not the only one to share a statement about this change. The co-owner of Rackley WAR also wanted to thank the 32-year-old, and here’s how he did it.

Driving for a team full-time means getting reviews from the boss, and that’s exactly what happened with Ty Dillon following the news of his replacement. William Allen, the co-owner of Rackley WAR, spoke about Ty Dillon’s contribution to the team. Allen stated, “We are super thankful for the job Ty has done for us this year as our primary driver.”
Further extending his gratitude, Allen added, “We appreciate his willingness to take on an additional role and help Dawson grow and develop as a young driver for the remainder of the NASCAR Truck Series season. We look forward to Ty’s continued valuable input and support in the ongoing development of our race program.”
Now the 18-year-old Sutton taking the primary driving duties for the team’s No. 25 Chevrolet in the Truck Series, which begins at Kansas Speedway this Friday, September 27. It is expected that the driver will be seen in the final five Truck Series races of the season so that he can get a potential full-time opportunity in the future.
