Tony Stewart is one of the most dominating and scary personalities in NASCAR. Don’t get misled by his stoutness or his cute smile. People made a similar mistake with Dale Earnhardt, and he ended his career with The Intimidator nickname. Despite all that machismo, Stewart is as human as any other driver.

But one only gets to know that side of him on occasions like these. His wife, Leah Pruett sat down with Mike Wallace and his co-host on the Fast Car 2 NASCAR podcast.

On the podcast, they discuss a number of exciting topics that fans might not know too much about. They talk about how the couple met each other, how they spent their time during COVID, and what they did during the pre-season.

The story behind Tony Stewart and Leah Pruett

She was asked, “How did the two of you meet each other?” Pruett shared before starting her answer, “I was actually sharing that story this morning as we took a hot air balloon ride. It’s actually something Tony had looked up, was interested in. We happened to pick the coldest day I think, it’s under 32 degrees this morning. Just something Tony wanted to work on, getting over his fear of heights.”

“But to answer your question real quick – we started dating right before the pandemic started, so our second date which was, I think, March 9,” she told Wallace.

“I was in Indiana collecting a few of my things because I used to live there full time, so I said, “Hey I’m going to my house in Arizona, would you like to come for the weekend? So he packs up 4 days and then the world shuts down, and he stays here for 4 months. In a row. That was our second date.”

One of the hosts cheekily interjected, Now he told me he planned that like that,” to which the other asked, “So he’s responsible for the pandemic?” He replied jokingly, I know the guy for a long time. He’s pulled out bigger feats than that before.”

While it’s difficult to forget the harrowing circumstances COVID-19 put the world into, it is great to know that something good came out of it.

Checking things off the bucket list

With packed schedules, all drivers and owners barely have time to spend with their families. But pre-season offers some relief, and Tony made full use of it.

Going back to the story Pruett started with, the host asked, “Tell me about Smoke, tell us about the hot air balloon ride. That sounded exciting.” Stewart responded, “Yeah, I mean, there’s mornings you wake up and you go outside and see them flying outside first thing in the morning, over the top of the house. There’s a local group here that does that, it just kind of was a bucket list thing for me.”

He added, “I’m like, Leah mentioned, scared of heights. But it was interesting. It was a lot of fun to do it. We’ve got a full day planned today. We’ve got a hot air balloon ride, planned around the golf course this afternoon. It’s nice in the pre-season to have a day to do some fun stuff.”
