Dale Earnhardt Sr’s legacy will remain as long as cars are being raced in the world. His impact on NASCAR has been such that his fashion and style are trying to be mimicked even now, more than 20 years after his death. It is only natural then, that Dale Sr. memorabilia is highly coveted within NASCAR nation.

Through his many accomplishments in stock car racing, he earned himself a legion of fans across generations. His “working man” background and tough approach with the media and racing brought him an outlook that has been replaced by none that followed him in NASCAR. So, merchandise associated with ‘The Intimidator’ going for three-quarters of a hundred grand is hardly surprising. But what exactly is this piece of racing history?

Though he was just 49 years of age when he passed away in the 2001 Daytona crash, Dale Earnhardt Sr collectibles still sell for thousands of dollars. Regardless of whether one is just a fan or a profiteer dealing in memorabilia, Senior’s merchandise is worth keeping an eye out for.

As listed on eBay and rarest.org, there are several items carrying his name that are for sale. On the list is Dale Earnhardt’s Goodyear Winston Cup Jacket which is priced at $4,000. The jacket carries the signature that he signed at the Dutchess County Fair in the 1990s. Valued higher than the jacket is Earnhardt’s Snap-On Tool Box, at $7,500. A limited edition item, it is also weather-resistant and has a lock included.

Higher up along the price list is an Earnhardt-signed race-used, engine filter from the 90s. A pure racing artifact, it costs $44,500. The filter carries the signatures of Dale Earnhardt and Eddie Lanier, his crew member and engineer.

But taking the top spot of the merchandise is the “MAXX Charlotte Dale Earnhardt POP 1/1 Psa9 Rookie Auto Rc DNA Autograph” from 1988. Valued at a huge $75,000, it is the dream for any fan of Dale Earnhardt to possess. The race card carries a picture of the legendary #3 car of Earnhardt and his signature.

During the COVID-19 struggles that the world faced, Earnhardt’s friend and long-term team owner Richard Childress had put up his own memorabilia of the driver for sale. In his attempt to raise funds for those affected by the pandemic, more than 50 items that included scale-size car replicas were for sale. Following along the lines of Richard Childress, NASCAR too has been attempting to set up a licensed merchandise line from 2022.

Dale Earnhardt Sr’s brand was created by the continuous crossover between who he portrayed himself as. On one side he was the rural man with a rough exterior. And on the other, he was a sporting legend who dominated the car racing industry entirely. The idea of a rural man who raced high-end machines is a gold-standard story. Following his rise as a household name among racing fans, it was his wife Teresa who turned that into money.

Earnhardt became NASCAR’s first “branded” racer who made sure to copyright everything that he touched. His signature was imprinted on t-shirts, mugs, cards, caps, and whatnot, creating a separate economy of its own. Last year in 2022, it was publicised that the racing promotion was working with Senior’s estate to create a new line of merchandise around him.

His estate, which is being run by his widow Teresa Earnhardt, has had a deal with NASCAR team properties. The initiatives from the likes of NASCAR and Richard Childress prove that Dale Earnhardt Sr’s brand is still deeply desired over two decades after his demise.
