While the community got a respite with the Late-Model action at North Carolina’s South National Motorsports Park enthralling the crowd despite the chilly Sunday evening, the fans were also shocked to see a gruesome wreck that rendered the CARS Tour champion, Deac McCaskill, unconscious. The 2016 CARS Tour champion was all in on the action, hoping to clinch the Thanksgiving Classic title in a race featuring drivers like late-model legend Josh Berry and local hero Brenden Queen.

Even though the race was a treat for ardent fans, with the field becoming as fierce as ever and chasing the win, the vicious wreck got their hearts on their throats. The driver is said to have been diagnosed with concussions and will take the time off in order to rest and recover, as the McCaskill family relayed the news to the community.

Head traumas are a different thing altogether. If bone fractures take months to recover from, concussions and serious head trauma take years for the driver to get back. Now, this is one risk every driver bears on himself each time he heads out to the track and puts on the helmet.

Even though some of these grave injuries are career-ending, like in the case of the great Dale Earnhardt Jr where a series of blunt force traumas to the veteran’s head got him rethinking his choice, putting him through a dark phase, the current medical facilities are a boon. Unlike the earlier cases when drivers were forced to hang up their boots, nowadays, through methodical treatment, the adverse effects of these injuries can be lowered to a great extent.

That brings us to the recent happenings during Sunday’s Thanksgiving classic. In the 52nd lap of the 250-lap race, a major pile-up brought out the caution. The #4 car, which was at the front, ticked off the avalanche that got multiple cars in the wreck, eventually getting McCaskill spun around and crashing into the inner barrier.

Fortunately, hours after the horrific crash, the veteran’s family members relayed the good news, giving fans a sigh of relief. As per Matt Weaver’s tweet, the family said, “He was diagnosed with a concussion but all other scans were clear. Doctor wants him to follow up with a neurologist this week and to get plenty of rest. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and are so thankful he’s okay.”

Keeping aside the vicious wreck, the race was a well-packaged entertainer for the fans. The aggressive yet clean racing from “Butterbean,” aka Brenden Queen and Josh Berry, got the crowd on the edge of their seats. In fact, the race quickly evolved into a triple-threat match when part-time NASCAR Truck Series driver Kaden Honeycutt capitalized on the momentum and moved up front to challenge the race leader, Queen.

Josh Berry, who barely managed to escape the gruesome wreck, didn’t go down without a fight. The veteran went toe-to-toe with the 26-year-old until Honeycutt made the move, going 3-wide to catch Queen. From then on, the duel was between Queen and the #17 driver, Honeycutt. To be very fair, Queen did an exceptional job, fending off the #17’s attack despite the tire disadvantage.
