Imagine being behind someone who does not have much exposure to the cameras and all of a sudden, everywhere you go, a pair of lenses follow you. For the 2025 season, Red Bull bid adieu to its Mexican driver Sergio Perez. Between choices like VCarb duo, Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson, it seemed as though Lawson is the best option one could opt for.
However, being a part of the much coveted Red Bull team has put Lawson in quite the spotlight. Being a 22-year-old who has just witnessed the face of fame, maneuvering through the same can be tricky.

When you are a Formula One racer, it goes without saying that the spotlight will always follow you. It might be possible that right when you are driving through the curve, in a serious situation, the camera might be following you through the same curve. Lawson stepped into VCARB, Red Bull’s sister F1 team, midway through the season after serving as a reserve driver in five races last year. His impressive showing during that period, coupled with his steady performance and composure under pressure this season, positioned him as the perfect choice for a promotion to Red Bull.
Speaking of the same, Lawson said, “I’m standing there. I’m standing there, something will happen, either one of them will spin and I’ll look down the pit lane. The dude’s with his camera sprinting down the pit lane to get the shot, every single time they do it. I’m trying so hard not to smile. Not because of what’s happening. Just because I know what they’re doing. I know the camera is coming. I know he’s trying not to lose his job and get the shot. So it’s just the situation”.
Liam Lawson has become quite a bit of a favorite among the audience. Replacing someone like Sergio Perez who has a legacy in the Formula One series does attract a lot of attention. Moreover, Lawson’s rise through the Red Bull ranks has been remarkable. From initially replacing Ricciardo for a few races to taking over his seat and earning the Red Bull call up, he has been one of the most highly anticipated drivers on the grid. Speaking of the media attention he had been getting, Lawson said, “It cracks me up dude. Like you’ve ever been in class and younger like a test, and you are really silent and you try not to smile, so it’s like that”.

What makes the sudden attention even more difficult for Lawson is the immense pressure of the Red Bull seat. Before Sergio Perez, drivers didn’t last in the role for too long. Arguably, that could have been due to the car being tailored to suit Verstappen’s driving style. However, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly’s short stints in the seat after promotions from Red Bull’s sister team have set expectations low for some.
For Lawson, it will be a double threat. It’s not just about proving himself on the track, but doing so on the media side of things for Red Bull. As fans may already know, Red Bull and its sister team are famous for their stunts and adventure segments featuring all four of the drivers. It has created incredible moments and solidified the connection with teammates, like in the case of Verstappen and Ricciardo, or Gasly and Tsunoda.
It might just be one of the things that determines how his partnership with Verstappen shapes out to be. The bigger moment for Lawson, however, was taking over from Perez.

The season hasn’t been very rewarding for Sergio Perez and everyone who has witnessed him on the tracks would be able to resonate with the same. Despite signing a contract extension with Red Bull, Perez had to be dropped off after he stood 8th in the standings. To add to that, Perez was 285 points behind the fourth-time champion Max Verstappen.
Lawson suggested that he has the ultimate respect for Sergio Perez and the kind of legendary driver he is on tracks. Speaking of the same, Perez said, “It’s huge I mean honestly, it goes back to when I was a kid and I remember watching a race that I think in Malaysia in the Sauber and he was fighting with Fernando Alonso. I remember that race as a kid and obviously to be competing against these guys now anyways, to put things into perspective, is quite crazy”. In an interview with Sky Sports, Liam Lawson praised the contribution of Checo and especially his win at the 2012 Malaysian GP.
