The Cup season has ended, and the cold breeze carries a whiff of festivity along with it. While the streets would soon sing Christmas carols, the drivers’ playlists already showcased their favorite tunes throughout the year. But one particular racer from Hendrick Motorsports was particularly disheartened by his yearly Spotify Wrapped.
“I have a pretty interesting music taste.” Alex Bowman was listening to rock before he could understand it. His teens were spent on pop punk, but he eventually transitioned to metal. Despite that, Bowman’s eclectic taste traversed multiple genres this year, leaving him utterly surprised by the app’s curated result.

Hardcore, Metal Core, Death Metal—if there was a version of metal invented, the Hendrick Motorsports #48 driver would have it in his playlist. Alex Bowman has always credited Blink-182 for his initiation into the world of rock. Whether it was his preference for Pierce the Veil and Dance Gavin Dance or his friendship with band members of Underoath, Bowman often flirted with the line between Emo and metal. And yet, the HMS star has always been vocal about his love for metal above all else.
This might be why Bowman did not expect to get caught red-handed in his betrayal by his music streaming app. Nevertheless, while the #48 driver was surreptitiously tuning in to pop, punk, and country music frequently, Spotify was paying attention. In an interview with the Podium earlier this year, Bowman admitted, “Somehow, I’ve gotten onto a country thing, which is kind of way off for me. But I’ve always been like a post-hardcore hard rock guy. But it’s been country music lately.” And the 2023 Wrap provided ample proof.

In his Instagram Story, the HMS driver shared his Top Genres of the Year, and Metal Core was listed third, below Modern Country Pop and Pop Punk. Needless to say, the metal aficionado was disappointed in himself. Bowman captioned the story, “Let metalcore slip 2 spots this year… unacceptable”.
The next story featuring his top artists brought no solace either. The top spot was occupied by country singer Morgan Wallen, while post-hardcore band Dayseeker finished fifth. Renumbering it to “1,” he declared, “I’ve really let myself down here.” However, he refused to take responsibility for this aberration.

A few years ago, Hendrick Motorsports launched a Summer Music Series on their Spotify account and their drivers duly contributed to it. As reported on hendrickmotorsports.com, Alex Bowman had shared, “I was always into the rock music scene, I’d say from the time I was in middle school on.” He truly connected with Hard Core Metal then.
“There were a couple years where I strayed from it then went back to it. I’ve bounced around quite a bit.” Bowman’s teammates William Byron and Chase Elliott had largely favored Country music back then. This was perhaps why he was determined to not share his playlist in the future. Bowman warned in the Instagram story, “This is what happens when you pass the aux cord. Never pass the aux cord [laughing crying emoji]”.

It appeared his teammates were raising the popularity of other genres on his streaming app. Or Alex Bowman simply could not admit he was riding high on the Country wave this year, neglecting his usual preference. Maybe Metal Core will regain its reigning spot next year?
