Dale Earnhardt Jr is more than just a NASCAR driver; his life work and his contribution transcend far beyond the borders of the sport. Perhaps that is why he is still the prominent voice and figure that people respect and adore. While the drivers are known to be tough nuts, driving the race car, Dale Jr is the one who led the charge about expressing his pain and suffering through his very own words.

Racing to Finish unravels the hard-hitting realities of a race car driver—one that is raw, pure, and unfiltered. Most writers need more than just personality and past experiences to write a whole book. And so was the case when Ryan McGee was roped in as the co-author of the book. However, despite his initial reservation and time crunch, McGee revealed that Dale Jr’s unorthodox yet surprising move helped him script down a special project. One that turned him from a writer to Jr’s close friend.

What became the skeleton of McGee’s book?

During the recent episode of DJD, Ryan McGee joined as the guest host in the absence of the main man. During the show’s segment, Ask Dale Earnhardt Jr, McGee took a stroll down memory lane. Talking about how he and Dale Jr got on board to start writing the book back in 2017. This was a time when the former HMS driver was competing in his last NASCAR season, and also battling concussion symptoms, which led to him calling quits from racing.

Recalling the moment when Dale Earnhardt Jr talked to him about the process of writing the book, McGee said, “I don’t know how we’re going to do this. We sat down and he goes, Well, need to talk about the process, and I went we need to talk about what we’re going to talk, what we’re going to write about first. And he goes, I got you. That’s when he airdropped these notes to me that I still have. These notes are, if you’ve read Racing to Finish, then you know these notes were the skeleton of the book.”

He then went on to highlight the fascinating aspect about Dale Jr and his thought process, expressing himself through the notes. “And this is how his brain works, why he fascinates me is all along while he was suffering he was putting notes in his phone and these breadcrumbs like what he’s thinking if something happens to me, I want everybody to know how I feel. Which is horrifying when you think about it.”

Ryan McGee is a NASCAR encyclopedia, and this was very well documented in his first book, 100 Defining Moments in Stock Car Racing History. After completing Jr’s book Racing to Finish, McGee was headed to cover the Daytona 500, and this is when he encountered Dale Jr and met him at the Streamline Hotel. It was far from the usual setting, but surprisingly, Jr gave McGee his most favorite moment with NASCAR’s most loved personality.

Dale Earnhardt Jr and his wife Amy were launching their very own vodka brand, and the commotion from the party prompted McGee to check up on the fuss. He then explained, “All of this is going on, everybody wants a piece of Dale, everybody there. The sponsor, the fans, and all the stuff, and he goes, Come here, and we walk way around the corner, through the crowd. He walks me to the back side of the hotel, and he goes, Hey man, how do you feel about Tim Richmond? I go what? He says, How do you feel about Richmond? You know, I never really had a conversation about Tim Richmond.”.

It’s fair to say that Dale Earnhardt Jr and Ryan McGee make up a good NASCAR geek duo out there. While Jr might have missed the recent Ask Jr episode, McGee sure made the most of the opportunity by sharing some interesting stories that might not have come to light.
