Comparisons are common as experts and fans alike rank drivers of different eras. Meanwhile, the development of technology, change in regulations, increasing budget, and other things have their say in overall results. Even though statistics do play a very important role in every sport, there are often too many variables to be taken into consideration to better judge the era-defining circumstances these drivers find themselves in.

Recently, Kenny Wallace addressed his concern about the comparisons being made between Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. The veteran gave his honest take on the comparisons.

After Denny Hamlin’s 50th win in Cup Series last weekend, a lot of fans have started making some wild comparisons. Recently, Hamlin was compared to one of the most loved drivers of the NASCAR circuit, Dale Earnhardt Jr.

In the latest episode of the Kenny Wallace show, the veteran squashed these comparisons. When he was asked by a fan that does more race wins for Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr make them better drivers than Earnhardt Jr, Wallace, in his response to this, quoted the legendary Bill Elliott who said, “Racing is all about timing and circumstances.”

He added, “If you look at Denny Hamlin. He has never been with a different team. Denny Hamlin has won all these races with one team. Martin Truex got going with that Furniture Row (Racing) Team and won the championship. Then all of a sudden Martin Truex Jr gets hooked up with where he’s at right now, which is Joe Gibbs Racing and he’s rollin’.”

According to Wallace, it is as important to have a good team on your side as it is to be a good driver to win championships. However, due to the controversy between Earnhardt Jr and his stepmother Teresa Earnhardt, Junior had no option but to move to a new team.

Wallace’s assumption that changing teams comes with pros and cons isn’t entirely because once Junior made his move to Hendrick Motorsports, it took Dale Jr four years and 143 races to get back into the victory lane. With his second win this season and 50th win overall, discussion around Denny Hamlin’s chances of claiming the championship title is taking precedence.
