It’s the round of 8, arguably the most pivotal stage of the playoff rounds, akin to how the semifinals often eclipse the finals in excitement. Certainly, Ryan Blaney would harbor profound regrets if he failed to secure a spot in Phoenix this November. Despite consistently qualifying for the playoffs since 2017, Blaney has never managed to climb higher than seventh in the championship standings.
In the current season, he once again finds himself occupying the seventh slot in the playoff table. It begs the question of whether this seventh-place standing has become something of an unfortunate omen for him. Perhaps even he might entertain such thoughts. Evidence: His disqualification from the Las Vegas race stemmed from officials’ concerns regarding the car’s template. Yet NASCAR subsequently reversed its decision hours later, following a more thorough examination, albeit without divulging the specific rationale. This turn of events has left fervent NASCAR fans clamoring for greater transparency.

NASCAR released a video featuring the #12 car in action on the track, accompanied by commentary from Elton Sawyer, the Senior VP of Competition. In the video, Sawyer makes an effort to elucidate the events that transpired in Las Vegas. The 63-year-old also expressed the intention of the team to conduct a more thorough review to enhance efficiency.
Elton Sawyer stated, “When we left Las Vegas on Sunday night post-race inspection was completed, we were confident that we had made the right call on the 12 after we got back home as Brad alluded, you know, it was a significant infraction, it was a significant penalty, and a lot of ramifications around the playoffs. […] Really diving into the inspection process. It wasn’t consistent from the time we opened on Friday until we finished our post-race inspection on Sunday on. That’s on us. It’s something we’ll take a much deeper dive into too.”
He went on to clarify that all cars had undergone the same scrutiny, saying, “The question came up from Dave last night: did the other vehicles go through the same process that the 12 did? And absolutely, they did. The difference is when you’re in the playoffs, every team is going to be pushing the envelope. […] It’s our responsibility to make sure that does not ever happen again.”
This measured apology may have brought some solace to Ryan Blaney, but it appears that NASCAR fans remain discontented, as they took to Reddit to express their dissatisfaction with the video, deeming it lacking in valuable information.

When Kevin Harvick faced disqualification, NASCAR officials took to Twitter to share images illustrating issues with the windshield fasteners. However, in the case of Ryan Blaney’s disqualification and its subsequent reversal, despite the release of a two-minute video, NASCAR failed to provide full transparency.
The sentiment reverberated on Reddit within the comments section of the video. Upon its release, one fan expressed, “I think he has too much red tape around the way they conducted the investigation,” suggesting an excess of bureaucracy and strict adherence to rules. Another fan clamored for increased transparency, stating, “Show us the shock and the template. Give us transparency.”
One observant fan even discerned a recurring pattern in such incidents, noting, “They always do the following weekend.”
Another commenter drew a parallel between Kevin Harvick’s case and the potential outcome for Ryan Blaney, remarking, “Yes, this recently started again to show illegal parts that NASCAR found/penalized/confiscated. Why do I have the feeling they won’t in this case since the penalty was rescinded? They really should but I don’t think they will.”
