It was a surprising return for Hendrick Motorsports speedster Kyle Larson to the 38th Annual Chili Bowl Nationals. However, the hopes of grabbing a third Golden Driller Award fell flat for Kyle Larson. The driver’s feature races were mired in disasters, as the driver couldn’t even qualify for Saturday’s Chili Bowl finale.

For Larson, the world of sprint car racing has always occupied a hallowed position. However, he announced his withdrawal from the Chili Bowl Nationals along with his fellow NASCAR driver Christopher Bell, after expressing their disappointment at the meager amount of the prize money. Nevertheless, the love for his dirt track prevailed. But sadly, it all culminated in utter heartbreak for the #5 Chevrolet driver, something he expressed in his post-race interview.

The 2024 season stands as a pivotal year for the 2021 Cup Series champion. Amidst his NASCAR commitments, the driver is set to appear for “the double,” which is the Coca-Cola 600 and Indy 500, on the same weekend. Larson also tried to attempt a similar feat by attending the ‘Dirt Double’ by attending the Wild West Shootout at Vado and the Chili Bowl event. However, he started on the wrong foot, which ended his evening early.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver was involved in a wreck with Christopher Townsend after the rookie made contact with Larson. However, Larson’s #98 suffered terminal damages in a second wreck and had to be escorted out of the track. Owing to this, in a post-race interview with Matt Weaver, Larson exclaimed, “Oh it was everything about tonight was all self-conflicted. Yes, I could have done something. He [Townsend] was just a kind of mess for me. I just wasn’t quiet comfortable, kind of saw the first few laps, new energy straight, not running hard enough. Got myself in bad spots and ultimately fell back and then just trying to get aggressive.”

Coming to his second flip, he said, “Yeah, I just made contact with that guy on exit two and we both went flipping. Just had a grind from there and thought I was gonna have an okay night. Needed some caution in the feature.”

“Yeah just a bummer on my part. Making a lot of mistakes, mostly from not being like comfortable. I wish I could be here all week, till Sunday and get to race the champions. Yeah, just be comfortable, against the curb here on a flat track stuff like that. Just kind of put myself in a hole and harder to recover,” Larson concluded.

Larson hoped to return to the Chili Bowl on Saturday, by locking himself in the A Main by finishing first or second on Thursday’s qualification race. Starting fifth in the heat race, Larson was off to a rough start. Moreover, the driver was able to steer clear of the wrecks, but eventually was bumped from behind and finished fifth in the race, and was placed in the C-Main. The driver was then placed outside of the front row in the B-Main, where he finished 2nd.

However, it was A-Main where he failed to navigate his way in the ensuing traffic in the race, clipped the frontstretch, and flipped twice. As a result, Larson won’t have to rush back from New Mexico in hopes of winning double championships.
