NASCAR Cup Series 2024 has officially reached the stage where the pressure is at its peak, especially, for the underperformers. Cook Out 400 was the fourth race from the last of the regular season, and Richard Childress Racing was long overdue for a win. But Austin Dillon finally got a hold of the race and the season.
The Richmond race, with its fair bit of complications on account of the tire experiment, was a crucial race for all teams. It was anticipated that the race was dependent on the accuracy of strategic calls throughout the race. And RCR fared with flying colors despite the pressure.

Things had not been working in favor of RCR for the entire season. There have been technical and personnel issues looming on the team that kept it away from the victory lane. However, the winless spell has been broken as Austin Dillon slid through the finish, but not without a controversy.
Most drivers were mentally prepared for the last-minute caution and the tire dynamics around it. As it turns out, Austin really stepped up at the juncture and made the most of the restart. The 33-year-old driver was certain of his car’s capacity as he pulled off the fastest lap during the practice session. He just floored the car right before the checkered flag, that sent Joey Logano‘s #22 spinning to the barriers. He later bumped into Denny Hamlin‘s #11, before clinching the vital victory.
“Feeling every week when you’re running 34 or 15 or 10, no matter what. You know, it’s just the pressure that we are put under to keep a job, keep our partners happy, keep our teammates, our company rolling, that pressure never goes away,” said Austin in the post-match presser, when asked about his mindset for the next weekend’s race in Michigan.
While RCR was vying for this season’s maiden win, the stakes were all the more high for Austin Dillon. The #3 driver did not have a win for two years, making every subsequent race count. The pressure build-up along with a good car for the Richmond Raceway helped pave the way for his astonishing victory.

Austin Dillon knew he had a good car going in for the weekend, he was happy with the speed and the controls. All he had to do was to avoid mistakes and finish the race. And he succeeded in doing just that. He also did not stop fighting till the very end, as he made his moves up the grid in the final laps of the race overtime.
Although Kyle Busch has a glorious history at the Richmond Oval with six career wins at the track, his wrist injury proved discordant for this Sunday’s race. As it turns out, Austin Dillon did not hold himself back and took charge of the team to get the slated results.
Without a doubt, this race at Richmond will be the most memorable race for Austin Dillon as it automatically reserved him a NASCAR Playoffs spot. But this win also had another significance for the driver.

Austin Dillon is a father to two beautiful children. And while his son, Ace, has witnessed his victory in the 2022 season at the Daytona 500, it was time his daughter had a view too. Austin was blessed with a daughter last year, and so, he has been trying to get a win in her name since. “I got my baby girl to victory lane, today first time she’s been to victory lane. I told Justin when he came to crew chief me, ‘Man, I got one goal. I want to get back to Victory Lane with Blaizey,'” disclosed Austin at the post-race presser.
This win was too personal for Austin for multiple reasons. He outperformed most drivers at Richmond and relieved the pressure off his chest. Dillon delivered the results and proved that the required work has been put in, by the team and by himself. He has the A car that he was promised, and he seems unstoppable since.
