Richard Childress Racing's win at Daytona—Is this the start of a new era for the team?

The Xfinity Series race at Daytona was as chaotic as it can get. Just seconds into the race, a caution was raised. Going into the race, Richard Childress’ driver was a winning contender, but things just kept getting difficult for him right from the start of the race. In the drama that erupted at Daytona, Ryan Truex took the chequered flag, his second win of the season. Followed by Chandler Smith in P2 and Parker Kligerman, wrapping the top 3. Coming back to what happened, Austin Hill qualified in P2. However, his run was delayed by a faulty radio as the race began. Hill had to start from behind the pack. He was then involved in a multi-car crash on the very first lap. A bump draft from Jeffrey Earnhardt sent Clements spinning, causing the accident. Hill, who was not even close to the incident, was one of seven cars caught in the ensuing chaos. In the multi-car pile-up were Gus Dean, Blaine Perkins, Ryan Ellis, and Akinori Ogata, currently the only Japanese driver in NASCAR, who were also involved.

Over closer look, it was revealed that Jeremy Clements lost grip after the bump and caused a chain reaction crash leading up to Hill. Matters kept getting worse as he reported on the radio that the car’s vibrating so badly that he could barely breathe. Followed by which he went to the garage to make further repairs. However, the car was beyond repairable, ending his run in a DNF. Here’s how the events looked on track:

Have an interesting take?

Despite the DNF Hill is going into the playoffs as he’s had a great season. Before this race, Hill competed in 21 races this season, with two DNFs, and has accumulated 698 points, placing him third overall. His impressive performance includes two wins and eight top-five finishes, along with two stage victories. Hill has led 139 laps this season and maintains an average finish of 11th place. His average finishing position is 1.8 spots lower than his average starting position. Despite all this, the RCR driver is not very popular amongst fans. As after the crash, fans were delighted by the #21’s misery.

Hill, now in his third full-time Xfinity season with RCR, has shown promise after coming from a good run in the Truck Series. While his Xfinity results have been mixed, his handling of the on-track incidents has been a recurring issue. Like the incident between Hill and Creed at Martinsville last year, which eliminated both from the playoffs, remains a vivid memory for fans. His wreck rejoiced a fan and he wrote, “Just park him and save us all from having to hear about him today.” After that incident, many accused RCR of taking Hill’s side and not of his teammate Creed’s. Causing more hatred for Hill. another fan echoing the same emotion wrote, “WERE SAVED.”

In a more recent incident, at the Circuit of The Americas this year, fans did not appreciate him shoving Shane Van Gisbergen, who, compared to Hill, is loved in the NASCAR community; such instances just kept fueling more and more hate for the RCR driver. After today’s crash, fans had a blast as Hill suffered. One fan wrote, “AUSTIN HILL IN IT LMAOOO.” Another one wrote, “Holy shit no way 😂😂.” But not all somewhere also concerned of is well-being. As racing and banter apart, off the track, we all connect on a human level. A fan just updated everyone on his situation after Hill’s radio conversation with the crew chief. He wrote, “@_AustinHill reports the car’s vibrating so bad he can barely breathe. Going to the garage to make further repairs.” What did you think of the chaotic Daytona race?
