Troubles have surrounded Richard Childress Racing for a really long time. It’s been almost a decade since the team hasn’t been able to perform well and compete for points in the NASCAR Cup Series. And this year is even worse, with Kyle Busch‘s apparent Gen 7 problems sinking the ship ever deeper. But the show must go on, decided Richard Childress as he embarked upon a night of leisure and entertainment for one of his proud initiatives. It was a happy night for Childress and the Dillons as they cheered the undefeated Carolina Cowboys to victory in New York.
Richard Childress Racing, in partnership with the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), made headlines earlier this year with an exciting announcement, as Richard Childress, along with Jeff Broin, founder and CEO of POET, acquired the Carolina Cowboys. And, Childress recently had the pleasure of celebrating one of the Carolina Cowboys’ victories, and his enthusiasm for this new venture was evident.
It looks like the team owner even saw it coming. As Richard Childress announced acquiring the Cowboys in January this year, he had said, “I couldn’t be prouder to continue building the Carolina Cowboys alongside Austin Dillon, Jeff Broin, our partners, and our fans.” With Childress’s energy and commitment, the Carolina Cowboys are already making waves in the PBR Team Series, blending his racing success with new thrills in bull riding. However, what better moment for a sports team owner than this?

But to have one team dominating its sport and the other team slowly disappearing into oblivion is a weird state to be in. But the latter matters a little less, at least when the former is taking center stage. The Carolina Cowboys win this weekend at Barclays Center amidst a 7-0-1 start was one such moment for Richard Childress. Childress along with Austin Dillon was seen having a gala time during the Professional Bull Racing event, as also seen in Whitney Dillon’s Instagram post.
Carolina Cowboys registered a sweeping win over the Texas Rattlers, the 2023 PBR champions. The last round of the Cowboys is the only undefeated squad to have scored a perfect 3-0. The squad has garnered seven wins this year owing to the triple-rides. In this third season of the PBR’s 12-event Camping World Team Series, the team’s count has risen from eight to ten.
The newly added New York Mavericks have performed well in their debut homestand event. But with impeccable form this season, the championship ought to be in the Carolina Cowboys’s lap. At the debut PBR Maverick Days, the opening day culminated in a bonus shootout round that was again spearheaded by Carolina’s Ethan Winckler.
All in all, the Cowboys are just unstoppable, and it is exactly what Childress needs. It is like a breath of fresh air for the RCR owner.

RCR might need some inspiration from the Bullriders
The Cowboys are on fire, and RCR can use some of its luck to get back on track. Richard Childress & Co.’s fate has almost been sealed for this season with their winless streak and continued technical troubles. While the #8 team is a bit close to the playoffs, the #3 team is a far cry. The team has long been under the scanner for below-par equipment. While its historically iconic drivers, namely Dale Earnhardt and Kevin Harvick, managed to outperform their cars, the current driver lineup is far from being such overachievers.
Many insiders believe it’s a deep-rooted problem that Richard Childress needs to know and take care of. As this unknown scenario is a frustrating situation for its drivers, speaking to Dustin Long of NBC Sports about his team’s season so far, Richard Childress voiced a similar sentiment. He said, “This is very frustrating. We feel that we’ve got a good shot. We can still turn it around, it’s not over, but we’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to do to turn it around.”

If RCR ever wants to find itself in the race for victory lanes, maybe it’s time Childress considers a need to change its manufacturer or find drivers who can align with their cars. Currently, it is not working out. Some serious thought needs to be given to the NASCAR Cup Series teams and their future prospects. It might also help to train development drivers for the big move to at least gain a fresh perspective.
It is no news that younger drivers in other teams are performing well in the same cars. Per se, take Shane van Gisbergen, for instance. The Kiwi is currently in his first full-time year in NASCAR Xfinity driving the No. 97 for Kaulig Racing and already has 3 wins, with 6 Top 10s and 5 Top 5s. So, maybe the car’s generation or Chevrolet is not the issue after all. It could very well be just a matter of driving style and a lack of adaptation. But the team’s internal struggles are real.
