It is no secret how Joey Logano has had a tricky relationship with the NASCAR fandom. With his outspoken nature, the Team Penske driver has upset the fans quite a few times. One such act took place last week when he took a dig at the NASCAR community. While he did that, he disappointed plenty, including one of the veterans in the sport.
As is with other elite sports, fans make NASCAR the beautiful game it is. While Logano has seen the ups and downs in his racing career, his perspective on the fans seems to have changed lately.

It was just last week that Joey Logano took center stage when he spoke candidly on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Logano being his unfiltered version took a dig at the fans claiming they are spoiled. What he meant there was how the drivers have been more accessible for the fandom in comparison to the players from any other sport.
While that may be partly true, the way the 2022 Cup Series champion put his point across didn’t go down well with the community, including veteran spotter Brett Griffin. With over 20 years in the racing arena, Griffin knows the sport better than many. Moreover, he most certainly understands the fans better.
Speaking on the recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, he explained how things were earlier in the sport. He said how drivers of Tyler Reddick’s caliber would be doing 60 public appearances a year. This would have come in the form of a grocery store visit for Monster or visiting a Hooter’s restaurant just to get more people together.

Griffin acknowledged how that’s not what the sponsors want to do right now mostly because of a change in the return analytics. While Logano understands that, he failed to understand the fan’s sentiments according to Griffin. He added, “For Joey to sit here who grew up rich as hell in the Northeast, who raced his whole life, he said NASCAR drivers make a little bit more money! The f**k they do!”
He continued explaining what fans of his have been used to: “So don’t tell me that our fans are f**king spoiled because they are not spoiled. A fan of my age is accustomed to being able to meet Bill Elliott at McDonald’s in University area by UNCC after qualifying from 6 to 8. That’s what they are accustomed to.”
Moreover, the fans give it all to get a glimpse of their favorite driver let alone the money spent on each weekend. Griffin explained, “This isn’t just about Joey Logano. This is about any of our drivers who don’t appreciate any of our fans because our fans spend 2000 to 5000 dollars a weekend and take their families to the racetrack. That is a pile of money.”
Speaking highly about the fans and defending their stance, Griffin didn’t appreciate what Logano had to say. He said, “What we do know about our fans is they love our sport, they are passionate about our sport, and they want to meet our drivers. Our fans don’t deserve to be spoken to in the context in the way he said that.”

What Joey Logano said can be interpreted in more than one way. Either way, he likely meant no disrespect with his words then. However, new Cup Series full-timer Carson Hocevar didn’t fancy what Logano had to say. In fact, he commented on the social media post to show his stance.

He said, “Why do we pretend and act like we give fans the most access?” While Hocevar agreed that the fans have more access as compared to other sports he felt the drivers could offer more. He said, “Our access is good, but not the best, and not full access to the average fan. And when we take notice of that we will able to make progress. Our fans are one of the most loyal fans, they should be treated as such.”
why do we pretend and act like we give fans the most access? baseball just a foul ball alone you could have a player land in lap catching the ball. football post game the crowd storms the field. just those two alone make you feel apart. we give our fans interviews in the midway…

Most certainly, this is enough to start a rivalry between the two. With both these drivers capable of being aggressive, it could turn out to be an interesting affair. Should Logano have not said that and avoided all the drama? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
