Everyone knows that Bristol Motor Speedway is not technically a dirt track. But then how are dirt races held there? By employing some impressive engineering and transformation skills! It’s true that stock car racing and dirt tracks have a deep, historical connection—be racing in the sands of Daytona Beach or the red clay of the Carolinas. However, it’s also true that many, including Cup Series driver Joey Logano, wonder if it’s really necessary to convert a normal concrete raceway into a dirt track.

As reported by Fox News, it took around 2300 truckloads of red clay to convert the speedway into a dirt track. Having laid down three to four inches of sawdust to protect the pavement, around 23,000 cubic yards of clay was brought to the Bristol stadium for the transformation.

With the depth of clay ranging from two feet on the straight and six to twelve feet on the turns, the whole process was not only difficult and expensive but also time-consuming and extremely technical. And this resulted in many people questioning the feasibility of the whole operation.

Joey Logano urges NASCAR to move to a real dirt track

In a recent interview on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio, Team Penske driver and defending champion Joey Logano shared his views on NASCAR’s decision to have dirt races in Bristol. He said,

“Bristol on concrete is one of the best races we got all year long. That’s just what it is. And I think there’s other race tracks that don’t put on a good race. I mean from my perspective now there’s a lot of business and stuff that goes along with all this, right? So, it’s not that simple to say this but I would take the race tracks that put out a bad race and get rid of them. And put dirt on those ones.

“Or go to a real dirt track.”

Furthermore, Logano said that putting up entertaining races is the main concern for the governing body and Bristol without any dirt has always proved to meet viewers’ expectations. He said,

“It was exciting last year, it was very interesting. It was interesting the first year. Like people tune in because it’s different. But Bristol in general puts on a good race. I hate doing it to that track. Do it to a track that doesn’t have a good race or get rid of that race track. Try something else.”

However, Logano did admit that things aren’t as simple. He acknowledged that the decision was made after careful consideration of the contracts and the money involved. However, he still added that the governing body must consider other tracks for hosting dirt races.
