Following a monumental and impeccable race at Indy with NASCAR nation witnessing another underdog story, NASCAR veteran and Joe Gibbs Racing driver, Denny Hamlin points out the unpredictable nature of the sport, citing the Chicago triumphant, Shane Van Gisbergen’s Indianapolis run.

Being a heavy favorite, heading into the 2.5-mile 14-turn road course, Trackhouse Racing‘s sensation SVG was lauded as a solid contender to ace the plain road course. However much like the veteran Hamlin’s conclusion after Grant Park 220, with the odds and the playing field even, Michael McDowell of Front Row Motorsports had the final laugh as he put on a masterclass, trumping the Supercar champion, proving that Cup Series had what it takes to hang with the best of road racers.

Kyle Larson & HMS Are Planning to Return to Indy 500 Next Year. But Should They?

Yes! It Is Great for NASCAR

No, It Was a Disaster This Time

A few months back, NASCAR nation witnessed one of the most shocking sights they’ve seen in recent years. An International driver putting their favorite NASCAR drivers to shame, outright dominating the city lanes of Downtown Chicago to make history, becoming the first ever to win the organization’s inaugural street course at the Windy City.

While the NASCAR community was stunned to see the Supercar champion steamrolling his fellow Cup Series drivers on the rain-soaked race, some drivers made it a pledge to return the favor. Fast forward to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the scene was set for another showdown as the 3-time Aussie Supercar champion returned to NASCAR for a second time.

However, SVG did not have the last laugh at the coveted 2.5-mile 14-turn track as Michael McDowell got this one for Cup Series drivers. Following his dominant win at Indy, the FRM driver joined Denny Hamlin and his co-host on Action Detrimental where Hamlin uncovered the harsh reality of SVG’s Chicago win.

“I think it went a little bit more back to what we thought, I mean that’s kind of what we, you know again, we talked about it, Jared many times and I think that Chicago thing and not to poo poo on it at all, it just lined up perfectly for SVG, the things, you know it just lined up perfectly,” said the veteran not taking away SVG’s win.

The 42-year-old then went on to explain his stance, mentioning how everything played out in favor of the road racer. Hamlin said, “He was at a street course where he’s at you know again I talked about where he was fastest versus the field is where all the walls were the tightest right? And it’s because he was in his element at that point, We were all a little more careful, right? We were probably paranoid a little bit more about bending a toe link than he is right?”

Getting beat in one’s game, especially by an outsider is a terrible fate for anyone. That’s what happened in Chicago if we go back a couple of weeks to Grant Park 220. Trackhouse Racing and Justin Marks brought in a 3-time Supercar champion from across the world as part of their Project 91 master plan and the driver did exactly what he had to – to win!

While the Kiwi sensation put on a clinic, outclassing his fellow Cup Series drivers who were overwhelmed by the tight technical corners and the wet slippery conditions, SVG was in his element, cutting through the traffic like a hot knife through butter. Getting beaten in their backyard did sit well with many drivers, especially with Michael McDowell.

Instead of denouncing SVG’s win or blaming it on the hostile conditions, the #34 driver went to the drawing board, seeking revenge. Speaking on Hamlin’s podcast, McDowell revealed his mindset, saying, “Two things that fired me up for the last month and a half is SVG kicking our b**ts at Chicago, that frustrated me, man, that should never happen and that made me mad enough to go to work like I’m going to figure it out like I got to be better. This is unacceptable.

While the FRM driver too gives SVG the deserved credit, he reiterated how the Kiwi got him to be the better version of himself, “I’m not taking away what he did, what he did was miraculous, I mean unbelievable but it should never happen and so that fired me up.”
