The latest twist in this racing saga surfaced at Watkins Glen, as reports suggested that Ford’s siren call might be luring 23XI Racing, the brainchild of Hamlin, towards its blue-oval embrace in 2024. The once-invincible alliance between Hamlin and Toyota appears to be treading on thin asphalt. Hamlin’s contract horizon extends no further than the end of the current season. The plot thickens as Hamlin’s dual role as driver and co-owner of 23XI Racing could paint the impending decision with complexity.

During the GoPRNLive podcast, a NASCAR insider shared his candid thoughts, “Yeah, you know, as far as 23XI goes. All of that, Lee, if you go back in history, when Toyota signed Leavine Family Racing, they were trying to sign an extra Toyota team because, at the time, they had Joe Gibbs in Furniture Row. Well, we know that Furniture Row and Joe Gibbs couldn’t necessarily agree on what that information transfer cost.”

“So Furniture Row goes out of business next, Leavine Family Racing goes out of business in 23XI, comes into play. Is there something in this whole deal involving Denny Hamlin 23XI Toyota Joe Gibbs Racing that is almost like a curse of Joe Gibbs that just went Toyota finds another team with Legacy Motor Club? Now there’s the threat of them losing a team with 23XI.”

NASCAR enthusiasts can still vividly remember when Furniture Row Racing, a stalwart under the Joe Gibbs Racing umbrella, abruptly shuttered its operations right after clinching the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series championship with Martin Truex Jr. If that dramatic pivot taught the racing world anything, it’s that even the strongest affiliations are not immune to tumultuous tides.

In a candid moment amidst the tire-squealing chaos of Watkins Glen, Hamlin himself voiced his desire to maintain the status quo alongside Joe Gibbs. But history whispers a cautionary tale.

Lee Spencer paints a compelling picture, suggesting that Hamlin, having observed the tumultuous dance of team affiliations, might be crafting his own path to autonomy. The 3 times Daytona 500 winner’s strategic shift in forming his own pit crews, guided by a desire to propel his venture forward rather than languishing in the shadows of pecking orders, speaks volumes about his determination to orchestrate the 23XI Racing narrative according to his own tempo.

“Well, you know, Denny was there for a front-row seat for all of that. And I’m sure he’s talked to Martin Truex Junior and gotten Martin’s side of the story because, you know, Martin was involved in that as well after Barney Visser. I mean, here you have a recent champion, and Barney said I’m not just going to be held hostage here, you know, and have to pay whatever JGR expects me to pay for this stuff.”

Spencer further added, “And not sure what Toyota’s involvement was, but you know, I think Levine went through a very similar thing. You know, once you’re in there, they can raise the price as high as they want because it’s their ball game. And I know Denny knows how this is going to end. Denny knows that he has to be autonomous to build the company the way he wants to.”
