In a surprising twist of fate, Joe Gibbs Racing’s crown jewel finds himself navigating a treacherous track to redemption. With a regular-season trophy under his belt, fans expected a victory lap. Still, instead, they’ve been treated to a high-speed soap opera of challenges.

Moving into the round of 8 of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, Martin Truex Jr’s journey hasn’t been the smooth ride that was anticipated. Despite starting the round of 12 in a tie with William Byron’s No. 24 team, the No. 19 team screeched to ninth place in the standings.

The stakes have been amplified after his 20th-place finish at the Charlotte Roval. The pressure is palpable, as evident in crew chief James Small’s words, describing their playoff journey as “miserable.” Yet, there’s a glimmer of optimism, with Small setting sights on a victory in Las Vegas. Truex Jr also expressed his strategy going forward.

“I didn’t create the system. We used it to our advantage. That won’t get us through the next one. The next one, you’ve got to be running up front. Two winners of the next three races are probably going to be playoff guys that are still going. Need to turn it up and we need to figure it out quickly.” Truex said on pit road after finishing 20th Sunday.

Race enthusiasts are buzzing with their playoff predictions for the final leg of the NASCAR championship. Here’s what fans are saying:

“Byron, Hamlin, Larson. That fourth one I could make a case for any of the other five. Six weeks ago I had Truex in, now not anymore.” one fan wrote.

“I’ve got 24, 11, 5, and either 17 or 45 as the final four, with 20, 19, and 12 getting eliminated.” another chimed in.

A NASCAR enthusiastic commented, “My picks for the final 4:

  1. Byron
  2. Larson
  3. Hamlin
  4. Christopher Bell”

“People are ignoring how well the 20 team has been running as of late,” a fan wrote.

“24, 11, 5, and 45 for me. Though I’m really only confident in the first three.” someone wrote.

Other comments read:

“Byron, Larson, Hamlin, and my gut is telling me the 17. If not the 17, I think the 45. Truex has been abysmal during these playoffs, and I don’t see that suddenly changing.”

“I’m saying Byron, Hamlin, Larson, and Buescher. They’ve just been the most consistent so far. That would mean Reddick, Blaney, Truex and Bell will be out. I do think there’s a slight chance Reddick edges out Larson or Buescher, but I’m reasonably confident in my Championship 4.”
