Daniel Suarez kicked off 2024 with a bit of a stumble, missing the boat for the Clash at the Coliseum. Yet, he quickly turned things around by clinching a win in the Mexico series exhibition race. Fast forward, and he’s just bagged his second win of 2024, punching his ticket to the playoffs. What makes this victory even sweeter is that it’s his first time sticking with the same team and taking home the trophy.
After Suarez inked a deal to extend his contract with the Trackhouse Racing team, there were a lot of raised eyebrows and questions about what the future held for him. But with his latest triumph in Atlanta, it looks like he’s not only silenced the doubters but also won over the big boss, Justin Marks.

Daniel Suarez has really found his groove with Trackhouse Racing, marking the first time he’s hit a four-year streak with the same squad in his Cup career. Before this, he did a two-year stint at Joe Gibbs Racing until Martin Truex Jr. stepped in, followed by brief stops at Stewart-Haas Racing and Gaunt Brothers Racing. When Trackhouse came onto the scene in late 2020, Justin Marks had his eye on Suarez from the get-go.
Suarez didn’t just join Trackhouse; he’s been at the heart of shaping its vibe and has stepped up as a key player. With his win at the Ambetter Health 400, he’s not just on the scoreboard; he’s solidified his spot in Marks’ good books. Last season might have been a bit underwhelming with a P19 finish, but this year, Justin Marks’ words are a testament to how much he values having Suarez on board for the long haul.
Marks can’t hide his enthusiasm about what Suarez brings to the table, especially after such a nail-biter of a race that’s already secured Suarez a spot in the playoffs super early in the season. “I don’t know if you could want anything more out of a NASCAR race than what we saw tonight. […] It’s nice to be in the (Cup) Playoffs in week two. I can’t imagine Daniel Suarez ever not being a driver at Trackhouse Racing. […] We believe in Daniel Suarez so we made some changes in the offseason. Now he’s punched his ticket to the playoffs in race 2. He is a great friend of mine. He’s a huge part of Trackhouse. It’s our job to put resources with him so he can do what he did tonight.” He also said that this is a contract year for Daniel Suarez, but this is not his audition.

Daniel Suarez was on pins and needles, not sure if he’d clinched the win after a nail-biter of a finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Then, the snapshot sealed the deal: Suarez barely nosed ahead of Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch, making for a photo finish that crowned him the victor of a wreck-laden NASCAR Cup Series showdown on Sunday. Nabbing his second win in 253 Cup races, Suarez kicked off a series of high-fives and hats off from his peers, a testament to the Monterrey, Mexico native’s popularity in the circuit.
Suarez, previously riding into this season with question marks hanging over his future with Trackhouse Racing, as per usatoday.com shared, “I was just hoping. I saw the tower and thought I was first. I thought I had it, but then they said there was a review. It was a very special moment.” The exciting finish actually ranks as the third closest in NASCAR Cup Series history, trailing behind squeakers at Darlington Raceway in 2003 and Talladega Superspeedway in 2011, both decided by a whisker-thin 0.002 seconds.

Not only was this Suarez’s maiden speedway triumph, but it also stamped his ticket to the playoffs and has solidified his position in the team as well, in just the season’s second race. But Suarez isn’t resting on his laurels; he’s hungry for more. The showdown at Atlanta not only marked the tightest finish at the track but also set records for the closest finish at any 1.5-mile track and the third tightest since electronic scoring came into play in 1993.
