As it turns out, the majority of Dale Earnhardt Jr’s record collection includes yacht rock artists. Yacht rock is a genre that originated in the United States and reached the height of its popularity in the golden era of rock n’ roll, the 70s and the 80s. It is not as heavy a genre as rock in general, rather, it is a mellow version of it with influences of R&B.

Speaking about his record collection, Junior explained how he went on social media to ask for recommendations.

“I went on social media. So I got this little room that I’m gonna put a record player in and it’s gonna basically be, you know, the best 100 records that you can have in a collection right? Everybody’s gonna be interpreting the best 100 differently, you’re right, but I just wanted to get some feedback on social media, which social media, is great for that. And so I put out a tweet and got tons of great ideas,” he said.

Junior got many recommendations that the number almost doubled his 100-record collection. By the time he was done buying all the records, there were close to 200.

“And now I think we’re going to have about a 200-record collection. So yeah, we’re gonna have more records than we originally planned but all of the feedback that I got was really helpful. I literally was just looking at it the other day and buying the final few records. We’re done. We got all we need, we don’t need anymore, feel good about the collection,” the former Cup Series driver added.

Junior would then ensue to engage in conversation with Mike Davis, explaining to him who the most prominent artists of the genre were.

“It’s mostly yacht rock. Mostly. Probably 60% yacht rock,” Junior said.

“What’s yacht rock?” asked Mike Davis.

“Christopher Cross, Dan Fogelberg, Doobie Brothers, Chicago,” the former Cup Series driver replied.

Then came the part that shocked Junior as Mike Davis revealed that he was not a rock fan which would lead to Junior explaining what yacht rock was and why he felt like his good friend would vibe to it.

“I’m not a rock guy, no,” Davis said.

“You’re not a rock guy at all?! Any type of rock?” Junior responded.

“Just the classics that you hear anywhere.”

“You would love yacht rock. It’s late 70s early 80s. But it’s sort of the more mellow…easy listening. You would like it, you’d vibe. Dude if you don’t know what the hell yacht rock is, everybody has got the right to clown you for a little bit. It’s definitely worth it,” Earnhardt Jr concluded.

After he had tweeted about his new record collection, it didn’t take fans long to respond with their answers. Bands of all subgenres of rock and metal were tossed into the mix and it was quite evident that likeJunior, most of his fans were fans of rock n’ roll.
