The main event of the 2024 Chili Bowl is around the corner and is set to unfold on January 13. Also known as ‘It’s Driller Time,’ the allure of the midget cars racing on the dirt track never fails to garner the community’s attention. But this year even before the main event unfolded, audiences witnessed some high-octane racing and crashes.
Recently, the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner, Spencer Bayston‘s stint at the Chili Bowl practice session ended unexpectedly. Before the main race even showed its face, he found himself locked up in a surprising single-vehicle wreck, following which confessed about his dismaying practice outing.

Having a successful debut in the 2022 season in the World of Outlaws, CJB Motorsports driver Spencer Bayston clinched two victories, 4 QuickTimes, five podiums, 16 top-5s, and 40 top-10s. With mindblowing stats like this, it would be wrong to consider the 24-year-old driver a stranger to the dirt racing scene.
Regardless, being talented does not mean collisions won’t knock on your doors, and that’s what Bayston got engulfed in as he underwent a massive wreck. However, the violent flips of Bayston’s #1S car weren’t because of a crash but because Bayston failed to tame the car, and naturally, he wouldn’t have liked that.
Speaking of his miserable practice session at the Chili Bowl, Bayston opened up and said, “I think just kind of a combination of things. Felt pretty good, I felt like we were better than we were in the first set. I was just behind Tanner there, trying to pace him and caution came out. I think it was a combination of having a lift for the caution and just getting into the corner, just jumped out and surprised me. I just piked and jumped a little bit, didn’t dirt up too bad.”
While the drastic crash was unexpected, it couldn’t shake his mettl. Bayston’s words brimmed with motivation when he said, “I think we should put a few more pieces back on and we should be fine, but got into just a combination of weird scenarios. Generally, you can almost sometimes anticipate that happening but that one jumped out and surprised me.”
After the Sunday crash, Bayston’s #1S Toyota midget car would require a lot of work to restore its mint condition. But the question is, will that be possible before the next race?

Many would think that the multiple flips of the car attracted a massive repair bill and might have left Bayston’s 2024 Chili Bowl prospects hanging by a thread. But that doesn’t seem to be the case here as unraveled by the CJB Motorsports driver himself. After the incident, motorsports insider Matt Weaver asked Bayston, “Based on what you learned today, do you guys have what you need?”
Spencer already had an answer to Weaver’s query, and unfurled their readiness for the upcoming race even if the car doesn’t get repaired in time and said, “Yeah, definitely! We have a car upstairs technically free, if we absolutely need it. but I think this [#1S Toyota] would be fine. There’s a small little piece we need to work on and then some shocks and stuff.”
“Not a great way to start Chili Bowl but I know because of the tools we have and the people who are working on it, we’ll be fine and have a good night tomorrow night and focus on our prelim out on Thursday,” Bayston confessed his saddening practice session fate.

The wreck caused dents to the midget car but probably failed to dent Spencer Bayston’s confidence in his ability to swerve on the dirt tracks. What do you think about Bayston’s Chili Bowl prospects?
