The 2010 season stands out as one of the most bitter pills for Denny Hamlin to swallow. After a career year that saw him win eight races, Hamlin led the points standings heading into the season’s final two races. Confidence was high, and it seemed like he was on the brink of dethroning Jimmie Johnson, who was in the midst of his historic championship run with crew chief Chad Knaus. However, disaster struck in the penultimate race at Phoenix. A poor strategy call left Hamlin vulnerable, and during the season finale at Homestead-Miami, nerves got the best of him. He spun early in the race, and his team couldn’t recover. Meanwhile, Johnson and Knaus executed a flawless race, never showing signs of weakness as Johnson secured his fifth consecutive title.

Year after year, Denny Hamlin delivered strong regular seasons and thrilling playoff runs. Yet, each season seems to end with him standing on the outside looking in. The scenarios have varied from crashes and strategy missteps to simply not having the speed when it mattered most, but the outcome has remained the same. As one of the sport’s most seasoned veterans, he has watched younger competitors capture the prize he covets most. Despite everything, Hamlin remains undeterred, fueled by the idea that failure is not an option.

In the latest promotional video for the remaining spots in the championship 4, Hamlin said “I’ve been doing this for 19 years now. We’re always kind of thrown in these adverse situations within the playoffs. You succeeded when you had to, there was no other choice.” It’s a mantra that has defined his journey—one filled with moments of brilliance and heartbreaking near-misses.

Four years later, he entered the finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a strong chance to win his first title. With the championship on the line, Hamlin’s team made a call to stay out on older tires late in the race. It was a gamble that didn’t pay off. As the field restarted, Hamlin couldn’t hold his ground against competitors with fresh tires, and he quickly faded. Kevin Harvick took advantage, driving away to claim the championship. It was a case of strategy gone wrong at the worst possible moment.

Hamlin had another stellar season in 2019, winning six races and making it to the Championship 4 at Homestead. As the race unfolded, Hamlin’s car was fast, and he appeared to be a serious contender. However, a miscue during a late pit stop would prove disastrous. The mistake took him out of contention, and he finished a disappointing 10th. Kyle Busch capitalized on the opportunity, winning the race and the championship. 2020 and 2021 were both poor finishes for Hamlin, as he came to Phoenix and couldn’t manage to convert the opportunity

He has a chance to secure another championship 4 spot heading to Martinsville. Denny Hamlin has established himself as a formidable force at Martinsville Speedway, one of NASCAR’s most iconic short tracks. Throughout his career, Hamlin has secured five victories at Martinsville, with his dominant performance spanning several seasons. His first Martinsville win came in October 2008, when he drove the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to victory.

Despite the gap since his last Martinsville win, Hamlin’s track record at the site remains strong, and he continues to be considered a top contender whenever the Cup Series rolls into town. As he navigates the final stretch of the season, one question looms: Will this be the year that Denny Hamlin finally breaks through and claims the championship he so desperately seeks? Whether this year ends with him holding the coveted Cup or not, one thing is certain: Hamlin will continue to fight, driven by the belief that his moment will come, and when it does, it will have been worth every lap and every heartbreak along the way.
