Speaking to the media ahead of the race on Sunday in Phoenix, Kevin Harvick was asked “Your contract only runs till 2023 but assuming you make every start, you would actually break Jeff Gordon’s Iron Man record in the 14th race of 2024. Is that something you consider going for?”

“No,” said Harvick summarily. He then went on to say, “I don’t know, you know I think everything is kind of a moving target at this point for me. I just wanna have fun as we go forward, enjoy it. There’s just a lot to consider for 2024, so I’ll sit down after we get done with this weekend. Start to worry about what all that looks like so that it doesn’t put anybody in a bad spot.”

The Iron Man record refers to the most consecutive starts a driver makes in NASCAR. Jeff Gordon took the record home on his 789th consecutive race start in New Hampshire in 2015. That meant he had raced every weekend since his debut in 1992 at Atalanta Speedway. For Harvick that record is very much in sight IF he starts all races of 2023.

As the stoic Harvick said, that day is too far in the future to dedicate too much energy on it.

Harvick said, “Look I thought it was a great move, I thought it was fantastic, right? But I think a lot of things were fantastic once. I think the upside to that is probably a lot less than most would see from the outside looking in, just you know Martinsville kind of a unique situation.”

He further went on to add, “With the radius of the wall, and the speed that you’re carrying. Standing out there, looking at this wall, it’s a long ways around.”

“I think as you go through those things, you’ve got to work through what’s the right thing for everybody, not just the one who creates spectacular moments for the sport… you bounce off the inside of the wall, take 2 guys out. There’s a lot of downside to it…” he said.
