Home/NASCAR

Back in the days when telecommunication was a privilege, commentators and casters came to the rescue of people. Sportscasters can be credited with a decent chunk of the popularization of NASCAR. One of the many wordsmiths who contributed to this cause is Ken Squier. The 88-year-old has not only orchestrated some of NASCAR’s most iconic moments on TV but has elevated them to sublime heights with the enchanting backdrop of his voice, turning those visuals into timeless masterpieces.

However, with the recent painful developments in his health, the motorsport icon has been put in a difficult situation. Dave Moody shared the sad news with a heavy heart after the event of Legends Day 2023. He was joined by iconic commentators like Mike Joy and Dr Dick Berggren among notable others, in honoring Ken Squier at the New England Racing Museum and later relayed the news on Twitter, writing,

“with a sold-out crowd of race fans hanging on every word. Unfortunately, Ken was unable to attend, and his family has asked that I share you with you all that he is almost certainly in his final days. The last three years or so have been extremely difficult…

“Ken’s family has been through an awful lot in the last few months, but they continue to handle things with amazing strength and courage. The coming days will be no different. If you’re the praying type, feel free to offer up a few works for this amazing man.”

Squier was diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2021 which worsened his health condition that was already deteriorating with old age. Despite the fatal challenge the pandemic posed to the icon, he battled through it and recovered well. Following the health scare, he also had to endure a minor stroke and a very recent fall that hurt him with a fractured pelvis.

Despite the bumps, Ken faced them bravely and was on his way to full recovery. However, another health issue this week worsened his situation to such an unprecedented level that it has been too much for his frail and aging body to handle. His family and friends have continued to surround him with strength and positivity and will continue to do so. Fans were also seen rallying in with their support for the icon.

Ken Squier created a magical connection with the fans through his voice. Watching over races from the broadcast booth, Squier was the one to name Daytona 500 as ‘The Great American Race’, a moniker that has been passed down in the sport year after year. Unable to believe the news, especially after his recent recovery from the pelvis fracture, one fan on Reddit wrote, “No dude no it can’t be”, while another fan remembered Ken’s contribution to the growth of the sport as he said, “Horrible news to end the weekend with, but Ken will leave us with so much.”

This man is an icon in motorsports broadcasting, delivering what is arguably one of Nascar’s most iconic moments in TV history.”, wrote another fan crowning him as the peak of motorsports casting. Another fan was quick to recollect Ken Squire’s role in making NASCAR a household name in the country as he commented,

“For thrusting NASCAR into the national spotlight and giving it a place in the rest of the US… thanks, Ken.”
