Chase Elliott finds himself in a fix at this point in time. It would be safe to say the 2023 season hasn’t been very kind to him. From getting suspended for intentionally wrecking Denny Hamlin to missing six races because of a broken tibia, Elliott has seen it all. But if this NASCAR Insider is right, he may still have a chance at the Playoffs. Here’s how.
As things stand, NASCAR’s most popular driver will be looking to end this poor run of winless performances and make an immediate entry into the second leg of the season. Elliott also remains the only HMS driver outside playoff spots in the Cup, with Kyle Larson and William Byron stacking wins and Alex Bowman sitting at the last playoff place. Popular NBC reporter Dave Burns, however, is willing to bet on Elliott.

His massive fan following and his ability to walk the talk have served Chase well over the past few years. But this year he will be needing more than that. Burns has explored the exact same thought and suggests possible solutions for him.
A win at Chicago will automatically book his berth. But if he fails, there are only so many races left before playoffs start. “I’m going to take Chase Elliott to start with because we all know he can point his way in with a miracle mathematical equation before the playoffs start,” said Burns.
“But he really needs to win a race. That’s the way to get in. That’s the sure way and I think he could do it here and the reason is because everyone is on a level playing field.” Burns’ statement implies that the street race course will be a new challenge for every other driver on the grid. A unique experience for everyone, it shows the same promise to be a success as to be a disaster.
Revealing his conversation with the 27-year-old driver before Chicago, he adds, “I asked him was there anything that he wanted to do differently or what did he need in the coming nine races to make it to the playoffs. He said, just doing more of the same. They ran strong. They weren’t the fastest at the right time, but he said that’s just what he needs to do. More of that this weekend, look for Chase Elliott to find a way to victory lane. And perhaps then put himself easily into the playoffs.”
Chase Elliott’s Build-Up to Playoffs as He Gets the Waiver for His Suspension
Trending
Earlier this month, NASCAR announced that Elliott’s suspension for intentionally wrecking Hamlin won’t stand in his way of qualifying for playoffs. He has been granted a playoff waiver that redeems his eligibility for the playoffs. NASCAR has been generous with these suspension waivers in the past and continues the trend with Elliott. Earlier in May, Bowman was also granted a waiver for missing 3 point-paying races as he had a vertebra injury.

Although this will be a huge relief for Chase, it was most expected. The fact to be remembered is that waivers do not guarantee qualification for drivers but instead make those drivers eligible for playoffs who have missed one or more races in the schedule. Currently at 25th with 289 points and zero wins, the road from here seems uphill.

What Elliott needs to focus on right now is minimizing the amount of time and maximizing the chances of playoffs. The only quick solution seems to be if he takes a win in the last races left until playoffs. If he goes by the points cut-off route, the chances of qualifying decrease by a great margin.
