One of the biggest highlights from yesterday’s race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the foreign invasion of NASCAR. With drivers from Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and even Japan trying their luck with the Indy, it is apparent that NASCAR is receiving its stamp of approval from abroad. Fans were bubbling with anticipation regarding the results of the race and finally, they have it.

However, there were few other stories to the race besides Michael McDowell grabbing the checkered flag. Michael Jordan’s recruit for the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard was somewhat disheartened that his debut race was not as happening as he had expected. Well, what can we say? What SVG did in Chicago set the bar too high, didn’t it?

For Kamui Kobayashi, the race was a bit surprising because he noticed an uncanny resemblance between yesterday’s race to the sprint car races. During the race, the Japanese phenom was also hit twice, which led him to lose positions big time. In addition to that, a mere 20-minute practice and qualifying run was definitely not enough for the World Endurance Championship driver to get the hang of it.

Moreover, the lack of sunlight blurred his vision. He feels like his performance was a shame, but he admitted that it was an amazing experience for him. After running 82 laps around the 2.5-mile-long racetrack, Kamui finished 33rd.

When Frontstretch’s Stephen Stumpf asked the 36-year-old former F1 driver if he had felt anything out of the way while driving his car, he said, “I think I got a big warning, how I handle the car. I think when I put second change tire, I got good speed, and I got someone hit me and I lost performance as well.”

Kamui Kobayashi had a two-fold mission in his debut NASCAR race

The former 24 Hours of Le Mans winner and two-time World Endurance champion, Kamui Kobayashi, did not drive on Sunday just for the sake of experience. During the post-race interview, he revealed his other mission.

As a kid, Kobayashi had always wanted to drive a NASCAR car, and he was extremely grateful to Toyota and 23XI Racing for giving him this opportunity. He expressed that he is not done yet and wants to come back for more.

He admitted, “I want to come back. I want to fight more. I was dreamed to race NASCAR in one point …one of those kids…thanks for this opportunity.” But what is this second mission?

“Bring me here, it’s challenging for everyone, but we made it happen. I hope we can explore a little bit more in Japan about NASCAR,” he said. After 75 Formula 1 starts, Kobayashi is the second Japanese driver to drive in a Cup race, the first being Hideo Fukuyama, who ran four races between 2002-2003. Thus, the Japanese superstar is looking forward to making NASCAR a lot more prominent in his country.

All things considered, Kamui Kobayashi had a decent run in the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. Although it was not quite eventful, it looks like he had his share of experience driving at Indianapolis. We can hope for a much stronger performance from him if he gets the chance again.
