The 2023 NASCAR season had been a complete roller-coaster ride for the racing fandom. There were enough instances, where fans were in splits, while in the other they were hunting for tissues, to wipe their teary eyes. Moreover, there were nail-biting incidents that left the audience on the edge of their seats. Nevertheless, with the year 2024 marking its beginning, it’s time to look back at how the NASCAR world enjoyed its New Year’s Eve.

While the drivers were indulged in revelry and were ready to look forward to the ushering of 2024 and to bury the past and start afresh, there were heart-wrenching occasions that proved how transient lives were and left an eternal void in the hearts of the racing world. With this box of mixed emotions, let’s take a glance at the happenings on the final day of the year.

One of the few persons, that could bid farewell to the year on a high note, was none other than the newly crowned Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney. After a summer filled with disappointment, the driver unleashed his aggressive side and went on to win the second consecutive championship for Team Penske. Riding high on the success, Blaney capped off the year by celebrating his 30th birthday, along with the celebration of his parents’ wedding anniversary.

The driver earlier in the month also went down on one knee to propose to his longtime girlfriend Gianna Tulio. Moreover, the Team Penske driver wished his best friend Bubba Wallace and his wife on their first wedding anniversary. Blaney took to Twitter and posted, “Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes! Looking forward to the next decade. Happy anniversary to my mom and dad! Special to share the day with them. Also, happy one-year to @BubbaWallace and Amanda!! Cheers to a year I’ll never forget!”

It was surely a happy ‘one-year’ anniversary celebration for the 23XI Racing driver, Bubba Wallace. Like Blaney, he was surfing high on success in the 2023 season. The driver for the first time in his Cup Series career was able to qualify for the playoffs. Following this, the driver also marked his first year of marriage anniversary with the love of his life Amanda Carter.

The couple had tied the knot last year, on New Year’s Eve, in the presence of the NASCAR paddock. The pair did not forget to wish each other on their special day. Carter took to Instagram to convey her emotions. She wrote with a picture from their wedding day, “Feeling on top of the world after our first year of marriage! Man, I wish we could go back and relive the most epic night of our lives. So excited for many more years of marriage with the love of my life, @bubbawallace.”

Firsts are always special, and so was it for the Wallace family. Another couple who are always a breath of fresh air in the paddock area are the Buschs. The 2x Cup Series champion and his wife Samantha had also marked their vows on New Year’s Eve back in 2010.

Being a doting husband and amidst his Tulsa Shootout commitment, Kyle Busch remembered to wish his ladylove Samantha Busch. The RCR driver took to Instagram to post a string of images with the words, “It takes a special woman for spending her anniversary at a dirt track. Thank you for putting up with so much and making my life special. I Love you @samanthabusch.”

Following the same tradition, another couple marked their years of togetherness on the final day of the year – Dale Earnhardt Jr and Amy Earnhardt. The former Cup Series driver also marked their seventh year of tying the knot.

Junior’s wife posted adorable pictures of the pair, along with the words, “Happy anniversary to my absolute favorite. Love you more than I can ever say. 15 years together, 7 years of marriage & two kids. And it all started over a house. Waffle House after the wedding didn’t hurt”.

Keeping up the same tradition of walking down the aisle on the closing day of the year was the 26-year-old Xfinity Series driver, Natalie Decker. The driver who had been engaged to her long-time fiance Derek Lemke, sealed their promises on the night of 31st December with loving kisses.

While there were enough occasions in the last few days of December that brought warmth in the cold chilly winters, there were also occasions that brought the world to a standstill and contemplated how fleeting human lives are.

In the season that is marked with an excess of joy and mirth, former NASCAR team owner J.T. Lundy breathed his last on the 27th of December. He was 82 years old.

The news that sent the racing in shock was the sudden and untimely demise of the former Indy 500 champion Gil de Ferran. The driver who was racing in a private track along with his son Luke, suffered a massive cardiac arrest and succumbed to it on 29th December. He was 56 years old.

The racing community paid their condolences to the family, including de Ferran’s former team owner, Roger Penske. He expressed, “We are terribly saddened to hear about the tragic loss of Gil de Ferran. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Angela, Anna, Luke, and the entire de Ferran family. Gil defined the class as a driver and a gentleman. As an IndyCar Champion and an Indianapolis 500 winner, Gil accomplished so much during his career. He was beloved by so many and he was a great friend to the Team Penske family and the entire international motorsports community. It’s a tragic loss and he will be deeply missed.”

While the racing world was still reeling from the demise of Gil de Ferran, another tragic news struck the world of NASCAR. The Hall of Famer, who was the first driver to clinch three consecutive championships, Cale Yarborough passed on the eve of New Year.

Mourning the loss of his childhood hero Jimmie Johnson paid his respects. He expressed, “Cale Yarborough was my childhood hero. What an honor to be tied with the legend for 83 Cup series wins. He was “the man” and the legacy of Cale Yarborough will forever live on. My deepest condolences to Cale’s family.”

To add to the growing sorrows, National Sprint Car Hall of Famer, and Christopher Bell’s mentor Rick Ferkel also embarked on his afterlife. Grieving on the demise of his coach Bell took to Instagram to pay his respects. Bell posted, “This man right here impacted my life as much as anyone. He started as my first sprint car owner but turned into my biggest mentor and life coach. He taught me the ultimate level of accountability and always pressured me to be the best person I could be. Thank you for the memories and wisdom, Rick. RIP”
