With only three stops left in the 2023 calendar, the Cup Series scene is buzzing with anticipation for the 2024 season. The spotlight is on three new faces who are set to make their mark next year. Joining the ranks are Zane Smith and Carson Hovecar, making the leap from the Truck Series to the Cup Car cockpit for Spire Motorsports.

The third name is a familiar one, John Hunter Nemechek, who previously had a full-time Cup stint in 2020 with Front Row Motorsports, finishing 27th in the standings. After retreating to the Truck Series to breathe new life into his career with Toyota, two successful years later, he took on JGR’s Xfinity program for 2023, where he currently leads the standings with seven wins. After a nosedive from the Cup series to the lower tiers, Nemechek is making a triumphant return to the big leagues, this time with Legacy Motor Club.

The latest buzz centers around a surprise driver swap. The Jimmie Johnson-led camp is shaking things up, giving John Hunter Nemechek a chance in a Chevy Cup car, and offering a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come in the 2024 season.

Earlier this year, Carson Hocevar was slated to fill the vacant #42 Chevy seat after Noah Gragson’s departure. However, the seven-time champion has pulled some strings to allow the Toyota driver in the hot seat of the Legacy Motorsport’s #42 Chevy this season.

Legacy Motorsport is making a manufacturer shift from Chevy to Toyota in the upcoming 2024 season, making Nemechek the perfect candidate for the upcoming season. But Johnson seems keen on lending his 2024 driver some time to settle into the Cup car, as he announced that Nemechek would replace Hocevar for just one race during the Homestead-Miami race weekend.

Reacting to this development, the Rubbin’ is Racing podcast hosts, Large and Spider, weighed in with their insider perspective. Large emphasized, “John Hunter Nemechek is a Toyota driver, and the #42 is still currently a Chevy until after this season when Legacy makes the change.” He highlighted the rare nature of a driver swap between manufacturers, underlining the fact that special permission had been sought. “It seems like even Jimmie Johnson had to step up to get their kid a shot to be behind the wheel of a Legacy car in this year’s Cup Series,” he said.

He further continued, You know, everyone just seems to be extremely friendly about that, particularly Chevy and Toyota. So, I’m glad that that bucks the trend. And we’re going to get to see John Hunter Nemechek behind the 42, a little preview of it even though it’s going to be a different manufacturer this weekend.”

With Spire Motorsports making significant moves, including acquiring charters and expanding their presence to field three Chevy cars for the 2024 season, Hocevar is gearing up for his full-time Cup Series debut next year. He is set to pilot the #77 alongside Corey LaJoie and Trackhouse Racing signee Zane Smith.

Hocevar expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I mean, anybody in my position wants to be a Cup Series driver. That’s what you dream about when you’re young. You want to race on Sundays. So, my opportunity to run a few times this year, to run on Sunday and get ready, I feel more than prepared to get in the No. 77 car with Spire.”
