NASCAR has dabbled in versatility, new energy, and a distinctive voice, along with Leigh Diffey, the Aussie, who has had a mixed reception in this universe. Diffey is on an upward trajectory. And, recently has moved from Indycar to NASCAR. Obviously, a lot of that credit goes to NBC and the fans.

But how has the journey, the transition, and the one-man sticking-out experience been for Diffey in the sport?

In the past year, Leigh Diffey has showcased his versatility as a sports commentator by covering an impressive array of events, including the IMSA Rolex 24 at Daytona, the Indianapolis 500, and the Summer Olympics in Paris. Currently, he takes on the role of lead play-by-play voice for NBC Sports during the NASCAR Playoffs. His experiences at such high-profile events highlight his extensive travel and commitment to delivering exceptional sports coverage.

On Speedcafe TV, Leigh Diffey spoke about being the “foreign voice” in the world of NASCAR. He said, “It’s quite obvious that I am a foreign voice. Of course, there is going to be a percentage that’s not happy because I don’t speak the way that they speak or I wasn’t born and raised in this country. But, for the majority, it was really well received, And I couldn’t be more thankful to them. I met a lot of fans at the racetrack. I was very cautious and respectful, and I could not have been more blown away by their hospitality.”

What makes Diffey’s involvement in NASCAR easier for fans is his experience across motorsports. He’s not only worked in MotoGP or Formula 1 but is a favorite in the IndyCar races. It’s not just about his experience in motorsports, but the way he takes fans through each moment of the race even has NASCAR drivers excited. Denny Hamlin couldn’t contain his excitement. “I mean, it had me standing up in my chair the last lap and I didn’t have a dog in the Harrison Burton/Kyle Busch fight.”

Sir Jackie Stewart and David Hobbs did NASCAR back in the ABC and CBS days, but that was as analysts. So, as the main play-by-play guy, there’s never been a foreign voice. So, it was a big deal for NASCAR. It was a big deal for NBC.

As of now, Diffey is happy about the transition to NASCAR and claims that his having a lot of friends in the NASCAR circle is helping him with that. He said, “It’s been amazing. I couldn’t be more thankful. I have a lot of friends in NASCAR, who I have known for a long time and who I actually met through sports cars. So that made the transition a little easier.” His friends in NASCAR include people from Jim France to Steve Phelps, and Steve O’Donnell.

In August, NBC Sports announced that veteran motorsports commentator Leigh Diffey will assume the role of lead play-by-play announcer for its NASCAR Cup Series broadcasts, starting with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, August 24. His coverage will extend through the playoffs and culminate with the championship event at Phoenix on November 10, airing on both NBC and Peacock.

Diffey, who recently served as the lead commentator for NBC Sports’ track and field coverage during the Paris Olympics, is a prominent voice in the world of motorsports. With over a decade of experience as NBC Sports’ main INDYCAR commentator, he has called all six broadcasts of the Indianapolis 500 and has covered nearly every major motorsport series, including NASCAR, Formula One, IMSA, Supercross, and MotoGP.

As Diffey transitions to the NASCAR Cup Series, long-time INDYCAR commentator Kevin Lee will take over the play-by-play responsibilities for the remainder of NBC Sports’ coverage of the 2024 NTT INDYCAR Series. This shift underscores NBC’s commitment to providing top-tier commentary across its motorsports programming.
