NASCAR experienced a decline in viewership and waning interest during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to lockdowns, people shifted their interest towards indoor activities and other games instead of witnessing thrilling races on tracks. As a result, even after races started taking place again, many people remained wary or simply, lost interest.
NASCAR has been trying its best to bring back its lost viewership. To achieve this, they have implemented various changes, such as introducing Next Gen cars for better parity, reviving North Wilkesboro, and organizing the Chicago Street Race. Additionally, they have tried to offer exclusive experiences related to food and beverages as well as live bands performing before the races.
The race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway emerged as a beacon of hope for the sport. The dramatic events at the race caught the attention of many viewers, helping NASCAR regain some of its lost viewership. It recorded its highest viewership since 2014, outside of a Daytona 500.

Reasons behind Charlotte Motor Speedway’s record-breaking race viewership
In terms of viewership, NASCAR recorded an impressive 2.9 million viewers for its Bristol Motor Speedway race in 2020, surpassing even the views generated by MLB on Fox Sports at the time.
Following the pandemic and the consequential social-distancing measures, NASCAR faced a significant drop in viewership. However, it seems their attempts to attract more fans have been fruitful as the recent Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, managed to garner immense attention. It would be safe to use the phrase “Charlotte Circus” here as the spectators never got bored amidst the high-octane driving and drama, featuring 16 cautions and a remarkable triumph for Ryan Blaney. Be it the Denny Hamlin–Chase Elliott incident on the track or the physical altercation between Bubba Wallace and Aric Almirola off it, there was a lot to take home with.
.@FS1 earned 2.93 million viewers for Sunday's #SupermarketHeroes500, up from 2.81 million for last year's Bristol spring race (which was in April).

Though the race had to be postponed for a day due to adverse weather conditions, it continued to receive remarkable attention even on Monday. According to a tweet from SBJ reporter Adam Stern, NASCAR set a new viewership record with 3.99 million viewers which is the most since 2014.
At 3.399 million, the @CocaCola 600 was the most-viewed @NASCAR race on a Monday since 2014 (excluding Daytona 500s), a stretch that includes 15 different events, though this was the only one on a national holiday. pic.twitter.com/alUSgvwQCP

Safe to say, “The Memorial Day” holiday brought back many fond memories and also hosted a highly memorable race that attracted a large audience. NASCAR would want to ride this wave of enthusiasm among viewers; and with the Chicago Street race lined up, the org must be harboring high hopes.

NASCAR is gearing up to increase its viewership even further with the highly anticipated upcoming race in Chicago, which is going to be the first-ever street race in the history of the sport. The race promises to be incredibly challenging due to the presence of sharp 90-degree turns along the streetway.
