In the high-stakes world of NASCAR, where each race and each point can mean the difference between championship glory and disappointment, the 2023 playoffs have brought forth some intriguing storylines. One of the most notable narratives revolves around Martin Truex Jr, who found himself precariously close to the playoff cutoff line, trailing by seven points. However, Truex’s remarkable season, featuring three race wins, six stage wins, and an additional 15 bonus points for winning the regular-season championship, ultimately proved to be his saving grace.
While Denny Hamlin’s playoff journey was marked by resilience and strategic brilliance, the same couldn’t be said for all of Joe Gibbs Racing’s drivers. In particular, Christopher Bell faced significant challenges due to pit stop mishaps, which proved to be detrimental to their playoff campaigns. The recent analysis of Bell’s performance has sent shockwaves through the NASCAR community, prompting comparisons and discussions about what went wrong and how it might impact his future.

Christopher Bell’s 2022 championship campaign was marred by a recurring issue: pit stop mishaps. The pivotal moment that exemplified this struggle occurred during the final round of pit stops at Phoenix when the rear tire changer for Bell’s No. 20 Toyota found his finger got stuck between the nut and the spindle.
This year, despite his pole positions, Christopher Bell’s winning chances continued to slip through his grasp due to pit road errors and late-race crashes at New Hampshire and Michigan. Even during the playoffs, Bell followed up a strong pole run at Darlington with a race-day mistake, resulting in a disappointing 23rd-place finish.
As Bell consistently secured pole positions, winning five in the season, questions arose within the NASCAR community. Was the blame to be placed on Bell himself, or did his crew share in the responsibility for these missed opportunities?
Opinions within the NASCAR community remained divided, reflecting the complex nature of this ongoing issue.

Christopher Bell, a driver whose talent is often debated, has seen his race outcomes influenced by late crashes. Notably, at Chicago, he led for 37 laps before being involved in a wreck. This led to divided opinions among fans, with some pointing fingers at Joe Gibbs’ pit crew for compromising Bell’s performance, while others placed blame on the driver himself for these last-minute crashes.
One fan on Reddit, recollected his victory in the Bristol Dirt race and wrote, “Bell’s lowkey had not a great season. After winning Bristol, he went all the way to Watkins Glen without scoring another top 5.”
One commented, “He’s got the talent but I think at times he pushes the equipment or his skill to the limit. Running hard gets him the pole and out front to lead laps but consistently pushing the limit leads to failures/wrecks.”

One fan blamed both of them and wrote, “From what I’ve seen, it’s a mix of both. He’s a talented driver, but pushes too hard sometimes. Then his pit crew has screwed him multiple times the last couple seasons with extended pit stops or mistakes.”
While others blamed put crew, “Bell is fast. His pitcrew has lost him numerous races both directly and indirectly. There was some this year where he would drive through the field time after time following bad pitstops – and would push too hard and wreck making up all of the lost ground from pit road.”
“He led those laps and won both stages because Larson started in the back and Hamlin had a speeding penalty which took time to recover from. The top 2 cars were recovering from penalties/mistakes and it takes time to go through the field.”
