Despite leading only a single lap throughout the race, it happened to be the most crucial one as Lopez crossed the finish line, just inches ahead of Conti. He managed to hold Conti off by a hair’s breadth in the final lap despite the fact that he was on two fresh tires, compared to Conti’s four.
In a post-race interview, Lopez expressed his emotions, saying, “I was always trying to get to this series, to do the things that I’m doing now, I just can’t believe it. So many years of frustration, it’s finally paying off.”
