It was an eye-for-an-eye moment on the tracks of Richmond on Sunday. In a race that lacked luster and a cliff-hanging climax, the incident between Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin assuredly comes as a saving grace for the fans, who were clearly starved for a heart-pumping incident.

The Cook Out 400 may not have delivered the performance that it was expected, especially after a race marked with carnages on the tracks of Tricky Triangle, but what caught the eyes of the NASCAR enthusiasts was the brewing sense of rivalry between the two racer friends. The incident seemed to settle scores, especially after Hamlin’s infamous statement.

The demarcation between a friend and foe is indeed a fine line and often gets blurred by the vaulting ambitions of the individuals and this was evident in the race back at Pocono. To remind you of the incident at the Tricky Triangle, the No.11 Chevrolet driver, had bumped Larson on the inside while both the drivers were jockeying for the lead and a podium finish. This led to Larson being shoved to the outside wall with his favorable finish being marred.

Moreover, Hamlin, in the post-race interview, after Larson had heaved his disappointment about his friend, revealed, How can you wreck someone you don’t touch?” Hamlin had also asserted it was the aerodynamics that had played a role in the incident.

Now, fast-forwarding to Sunday’s race at Richmond, it was apparent that the No.5 Chevrolet driver was still sore about the incident and also declined to meet Hamlin in person in order to bury the hatchet. Furthermore, Larson, in the pre-race interview, had also asserted that he would race differently from that race onwards and it seems that the speedster stood by his words.

Larson, after a good pit stop and taking fresh tires, tried to outlast his friend Denny Hamlin, who was in front of Larson, as he tried to regain his track position. Instead of making a side pass and choosing a different lane, the No.5 Chevrolet driver hit the bumper of Hamlin’s car before speeding past him.

In the background from the analyst booth of NBC Dale Earnhardt Jr and Steve Letarte were heard saying, “Kyle [Larson] on newer tires just telling, ‘Denny you are not going to be the guy that slows me up’…Didn’t wreck him or anything.”

The incident does throw some light into the uneasy atmosphere between the two drivers, and the friendship seems to have faced a dent after the incident. Nevertheless, it seems that netizens found the action justified and showed their support for Larson while reiterating the same justification that Hamlin had used in the post-race interview.

They wrote under the post on Twitter;

“Never Touched Him!”

“There isn’t a dent on either car, obviously never touched him…”

“Never touched him. Aero..”

Others also wrote,

“Denny had a choice to lift and didn’t and Kyle never touched him.”

“Larson never touched him.”
