A lot of focus for fans of American motorsports is on the Iowa Speedway in 2024. The track will see its inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race on June 16 and only a month later, there will be an NTT IndyCar doubleheader as well. Grocery chain Hy-Vee is the partner of the IndyCar doubleheader, and while their contract runs through this year, the company is reportedly in talks with NASCAR to sponsor this year’s Cup Series race.

Had it not been for these 2 sports, the Iowa Speedway may have faded into oblivion. IndyCar has raced on its asphalt 19 times so far, and NASCAR has run multiple Xfinity and Truck Series on it as well. However, there was nothing apart from an ARCA race in 2021 as a result of which there was a lot of uncertainty about the track. But thanks to Hy-Vee, IndyCar made its return to Iowa in 2022 and rejuvenated the venue.

It’s no surprise that Hy-Vee is looking to invest in the NASCAR Cup Series race. As per a report in Yahoo Sports, track president Eric Peterson believes that it will be the biggest race of the year at the venue. Ticket sales suggest the same as well. Every single ticket was claimed before they went on sale on December 4 with fans even putting down a $25 deposit in advance. The grandstand tickets were priced as high as $604 on StubHub.

“Showing that we have a sold-out race in a matter of minutes really does prove that there is an appetite for racing at Iowa Speedway. If you haven’t been to a NASCAR race, it is an experience unlike any other in any sport or any entertainment. It’s great watching it on television, but being there is such a visceral experience,” Peterson said, as per Yahoo Sports.

What’s surprising is that it took NASCAR so long to finally organize a Cup Series race at the Iowa Speedway. The stock car racing body had purchased the track in 2013 but only used it for Xfinity and Truck Series racing. Given the fan response to the inaugural Cup race at the venue, it’s safe to say that they missed out big time.

A lot is being planned for the fans who will be attending the Cup Series race in June this year. The track’s infrastructure has seen massive improvement recently, and as per a high-ranking official in NASCAR, it has everything to host a Cup Series race. It might be an indication of things to come at the venue in the future.

“You won’t find a racetrack that has so much ready from an infrastructure standpoint. Look how nice the media center is, how nice the infield is. The garage area is top-notch. You have the Newton Club. This place from a racetrack standpoint can handle a Cup Race,” the NASCAR Communications Manager said.
