Kyle Busch knows. This isn’t an unfinished sentence but rather a statement or at the expense of sounding too dramatic, a prophecy. “You can be leading going down the backstretch and have someone drill you from behind and crash you,” Busch had said about racing at Daytona recently.

As well known, racing comes at a cost, and naturally, wrecks increase that cost.

And arguably, no race on the calendar is as wreck-friendly as Daytona, something Kyle Busch’s t-shirt made clear.

“MOST EXPENSIVE DAY EVERY YEAR,” read a slogan on the two-time NASCAR Cup champion and truck team owner.

Obviously, Busch meant it as a joke as he would’ve hoped for no wrecks or crashes for his team, Kyle Busch Motorsports, that fielded three entries in the Truck Series race.

Unfortunately, though, that wasn’t the case.

Because all three of Busch’s trucks were caught up in a pileup of wrecks, meaning the day did end up being quite expensive for him.

Kyle Busch looking to check off the last box on his resume

Now that the truck race is over, Kyle Busch can take off the team owner hat and put on the driver hat for Sunday’s big race.

A race which the Joe Gibbs driver hasn’t won yet in his career, despite coming close on a few occasions.

“The Daytona 500 is one that has eluded me, and many others for that matter. I would certainly like to think I could get that race checked off my list before it’s all said and done, and to also be known as a Daytona 500 champion in addition to my championships and other race wins,” Busch said.

He admitted that “the superspeedway thing” has not been his expertise in the last few seasons. But despite that, he is focused.

It will be interesting to see what Kyle Busch’s approach would be on Sunday. He’d undoubtedly have bad memories of 2021 in mind when he got roped in the massive pile-up at the end.

And now, with the way the truck race went, he’d be a little more careful as he aims for the long-awaited win.
