California is currently grappling with some of the worst wildfires in recent memory. Flames have consumed thousands of acres across the state—especially around Los Angeles and surrounding areas, leading to tragic losses of life and forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

The fires have been made worse by dry conditions and high winds, and with California’s rough terrain, firefighters have had an uphill battle trying to get them under control. But in times like these, heroes emerge—and one such hero is the father of NASCAR star Garrett Smithley.

RK Smithley, a former military serviceman and father of Xfinity Series driver, Garrett Smithley, has stepped up in a big way. Despite being retired, his sense of duty is as strong as ever.

He’s been flying the DC-10 Air Tanker to drop water and fire retardant on the wildfire hotspots across California. These massive aircraft can carry up to 9,400 gallons of water or fire retardant, and with one swift release, they can help slow down the flames.

Garrett recently took to social media to praise his dad’s incredible efforts. On X (formerly Twitter), he posted, “Dad is heading to Cali right now with @10Tanker Tanker 914 is flying now, he should be on scene tomorrow morning with tanker 912. Hopefully, they will give the ground crews some much-needed support to fight these awful fires.”

The NASCAR community quickly rallied behind RK Smithley, calling him a hero. Flying a converted wide-body aircraft like the DC-10 is no easy feat. These planes have to fly incredibly low over rugged terrain—often over canyons—with unpredictable thermal shifts as they release their payload of fire retardant. It’s risky work, but RK isn’t slowing down.

Garrett posted another update saying, “There he is! Nice drop.”

Stepping up in times like these is what makes someone a hero, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon even shared his praise.

Jeff Gordon’s heartfelt message for all firefighters

Jeff Gordon, a California native, knows all too well the impact of wildfires. Growing up in Vallejo, Gordon has a deep connection to the state and its people. In a heartfelt message, he thanked those working to control the devastating fires, including people like RK Smithley. “As we are all far too familiar right now, wildfires are devastating communities across Southern California. Families have lost their homes. Lives have been lost. First responders are risking their lives. And so many people are enduring unimaginable hardship. I want to thank everyone who’s working tirelessly to control this unthinkable event. From the firefighters on the front lines to the countless volunteers opening their hearts and their homes to those in need.”

Gordon also encouraged everyone who was able to help. “If you are able, please consider donating or volunteering to support wildfire recovery efforts. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in helping to rebuild these communities.”

Although it’s impossible to truly understand what those affected by the fires are going through, Gordon knows the people of California are tough and resilient. “I was born and raised in California and so it will always be close to my heart. And I know its people are incredibly resilient. Let’s come together to make an impact. On behalf of all my teammates at Hendrick Motorsports, please stay safe, and thank you for your support.”

In times of crisis like this, every bit of help matters—whether it’s donating, volunteering, or just spreading the word. The efforts of people like RK Smithley and Jeff Gordon are inspiring, but the recovery will take all of us working together.
