Kurt Busch has been on the sidelines as he recovers from his concussion-like symptoms after being involved in a hard impact during the qualifying at Pocono Raceway. Now as NASCAR heads to its final race before the playoffs, Griffin asks Busch to announce if he would be able to race in the playoffs or not. So that a playoff spot could open up for another driver.

During the podcast, spotter Brett Griffin stated, “Here’s where it gets ethical or unethical. If Kurt Busch knows for a fact that he is not returning to this car over the course of the next four weeks, he should announce that now, ethically.”

“But there’s some unethical sh*t that goes on around here.”

The argument was around the fact that if Busch cannot race at Daytona then he shouldn’t make it into the playoffs. Moreover, he should announce that as soon as possible, rather than wait.

Since Busch holds a waiver that locks him into the playoffs, Griffin thinks it would be unethical for the 23XI Racing team to not announce beforehand whether he can or cannot race in the playoffs.

What is the waiver system that Kurt Busch currently holds in the NASCAR Cup Series?

NASCAR introduced the waiver system a few years back, which allowed drivers to sit out of races in cases of injuries. While holding a waiver, if the driver has made it into the playoffs, they will be locked in regardless if anyone else gains further points. In short, it is sort of a guaranteed seat in the playoffs.

However, the waiver system has also been under harsh criticism after Kyle Busch won the championship in 2015, even without having to race the first eleven races. Busch was injured during an Xfinity race at the start of the 2015 season, which allowed him to claim a waiver.
